Funeral corteges banned in Nottingham.
Discussion
Alright, it's not quite what the article says as its headline but I can't see how one would be legal other than by selective prosecution. Unless of course they have various exceptions.
" "Boy racers" could face jail term
So-called "boy racers" caught in Nottingham could now face a jail sentence as the city council has obtained new powers.
The council has been granted an injunction to stop car "cruises", in what is thought to be the first ban of its kind in the UK.
It bans any event in which five or more vehicles congregate, race or drive in convoy in any part of the city.
Those flouting the ban could be fined or sent to prison. "

Local council going power crazy again. What about car club meets where people drive quite safely in convoys? Rallys and such like.
Council has also made the first UK bylaw banning the purchase of minomoto's or whatever they're called. I can't stand those bikes but can't see that it's right to ban their purchase.
Stupid fekwits at the town hall!

Not sure about banning funeral corteges, but they could certainly draft up a law requiring them to drive at normal speeds. The so called 'respectfull' speed doesnt show any respect for anyone, certainly not other motorists.
I've heard before that the classic Mk2 Granada based hearses took a chassis that was no stranger to getting a bit lairy round a corner, chopped all the steel bodywork off the back, and replaced it with fibreglass.
The result, effectively, being a car weighing (at a random stab in the dark) 1000kg, having next to nothing keeping the rear drive wheels in touch with the ground, and a good old Cologne V6 up front.
That must have been interesting keeping things "respectful" heading to church on an icy winter morning, even at barely above auto-creep speeds...
It's a shame that the last Galaxie V8 hearse in the country was retired a year or two ago. I did rather like the idea of my very last journey involving laying rubber from a V8 muscle car.

At that rate they will be banning drinking next, everything else having been banned already.
Can you imagine that? Nottingham city centre without hundreds of people throwing up and fornicating in public after 11pm?
No. I bet the council coffers can't either.
From what I saw of them the cruises at the Broadmarsh were pretty stupid affairs a few years ago. And the council's policy of forcing vehicles and pedestrians out of segregated areas and into direct competition for ground space seems short sighted, given the approval of a drinking culture.
But if they truly have the health and safety of the public at heart they really should do something about the city centre culture they seem to encourage.
The wording of the ruling was incredible too - it was against "persons unnamed" I believe, an injunction that most people won't know about, as it's not exactly being shouted from the rooftops.
I attended a baptism last week, where the majority of people didn't know the way to/from the church, so we drove in convoy. That is now, technically, contempt of court I believe.
I also play sport, and often we'll meet in a car park and take the minimum number of cars...following whoever knows the way...damn.
The council in Nottingham is very anti-car, and has shown on numerous occasions that they're only going to take the stick approach to motorists. There HAVE undoubtedly been problems with "racers", although there's also a large cruise scene in the east midlands - that DOESN'T involve racing, just meeting up and looking at / discussing cars. Some people organised a weekly meet (in the middle of f'in nowhere...) but this has almost died now due to a regular police presence, and police basically using it as an excuse to stop every modded car they see.
I'm all for police enforcing the law, but not if they only target a small subset of the population, based on the amount of time they've spent on their cars. These cars are, in the main, very well maintained, and although some are driven "in anger" occasionally, many are not. There are far greater problems than groups talking about cars here, like the number of uninsured motorists, motorists who drive in micra's without working lights (actually, just people who drive micras).
When I say there's a "scene", there are a few hundred people who meet regularly...if these people were all eastern European (say), they'd have their own Council funded community centre by now...but no, instead they're all villains.

Given that wording, parking at work is illegal! More than 5 cars have congrgated for the event of working...
As far as I can see it gives them the right to ban virtually anything! Surely the police already have plenty of power to move people on anyway (disturbing the peace, etc) if the event is a problem so why the apparently police state power??

this has been in the pipeline ages, i was massive in the cruise scene 2-3 years
ago organising cruises around the mids, inc notts. where 400-1000 cars would
turn up, i have also convoyed upto 300 cars in one line, and i will tell you that the problem is usually the police block the roads, out last cruise was at a sainburys in the mids, the manager was fine, all going in great. even managed to double lane the entrance for speed access but still let ppl out. the police turn up and they manged to block the road & motorway, cause mayhem, and get very heavy handed, ok turn up i understand that and i like to see them there, but if they left us to it there would be no hassle at all. in the end, they had realised what a mess they made the road networks and said "just get them in as fast as possible" err it would have been fine if they just turned up when we where all in there.
as for the news article, looks like they still have me on archive then, as my lotus esprit was in the footage AGAIN, that was 3-4 years ago.
britain is going to taking over by tree huggin anti-car hippies in the next 10 years and us piston heads are going to be hung if they have there way

What a badly written article: -
The website in question is Nottingham based, viewed mainly by people of Notts, most of whom live / work in Nottingham ffs. The site (AFAIK) hasn't been encouraging people to "return" to Notts, it merely gives them sometwhere to discuss cars (amongst other things). There hasn't been an active campaign to get people to travel to Nottingham..the people live there ffs!!!
The Broadmarsh area hasn't been used for cruises in over a year, as people have been forced to go elsewhere.
This article also fails to mention that the powers are only effective in the City Council's area...not the whole of Nottingham by any stretch apparently...and is far to broad - a little worryingly so.
Badly researched BBC article sais said:
"Police brought in a dispersal order in 2005 to tackle the problem but the drivers have been encouraged to return to the city via an enthusiasts' website."

As others have said Nottingham have a bit of an anti car history.
I was around there when they had the Lilac Leopard fiasco in the 70s.
Basically they wanted to keep cars out of the City Centre.
They blocked roads off, made no through roads, no right turns, no left turns, bus gates, etc etc to make life for the private motorist as difficult as possible.
They bought a huge fleet of Leyland Leopard buses which they painted lilac, hence they were known as Lilac Leopards (actually they weren't lilac in colour they were
LILAC!!!!
Anyway I digress.
They constructed a series of free park and ride sites around the ring road to encourage drivers to park and ride on the basis that they had made life as unbearable for motorists as possible in the city.
Basically the whole scheme was a failure. People said that practically the scheme was unworkable for a number of very practical reasons, that we drivers have paid a lot of money to use our cars on the road (a lot more nowadays), we pay you, Nottingham council, a lot of rates (again a lot more nowadays) etc. etc. and we "are going to use our cars, and you Nottingham council can feck right off."
Scheme foundered in disgrace, and all buses sold off to Bartons at knock down prices.
Another scheme that a council wasted a lot of money on.
Frankly these days Nottingham being so anti car is one of those places that I just do not go and therefore spend no money. It joined, Wales esp N Wales, Cumbria, Lanca$hire, London, Oxford, Cambridge.

It galls me to admit this but I actually used the 'light rail' system the other weekend.
Some friends were staying at a hotel just the other side of the canal. Since they come from Croydon and are used to trams they were keen to see wat Nottingham had to compare. Also to one of them is a little disabled so we had some excuse to take the tram from the station up to Hockley rather than walk. That's one stop and takes almost no time at all. £1.20 each. £4.80 for 4 of us. And then the same back. It would have been quicker and cheaper to to have picked them up and then driven up to the Fletchergate car park.
In the other hand the onstreet parking near their hotel was free on a Saturday after 6pm so that slightly offset the tram ride.
Apparently they have abandoned the all day tickets, mainly because working parents would give kids in the school holidays a quid (or whatever) to go and play on the trams for the day. Much to the annoyance of the regular clientele.
Odd how people of all walks of life seem to have much more imagination and creativity when it suits them.

The buses in Scarborough are crap and expensive too, my Uni is about 1.2 miles (uphill) from my house and a bus from near my house to Uni costs somewhere near £1.50 for a single ticket!
So to save money I drive and then have a 5-10 minute walk up a very steep hill to get to uni from a public car park as the Uni has recently employed an outside company to fine its students (who pay for the uni anyway) for wanting to park in their carpark.
It pees me off a bit.
