I heard a whisper that Peter Wheeler is thinking about starting a new car company out of the old TVR factory - anyone heard anything similar?

It would lovely to think that rumour is true & that there would be a few hundred job vacancies for the laid off workforce

Sadly I think not

No guarantee it would be car related even if it were true.

If it is of course, the business plan is simple:

1) Buy latest gen Ford or Chevy V8 engine/transmissions
2) House 1) in suitably competent chassis
3) Put in simple, reliable electrical system
4) Clad in GRP/Leather (be careful of overglueing)
5) Sell at a sensible price.

Isn't that what they used to do before losing the plot and charging Porsche money for too similar a range of cars???

Should never have stopped making the Griff / Chim IMO

Ok, I'm not trying to start a rumour here, I just heard something through industry contacts, and was trying to see if anyone else had heard anything to coroborate the information

Doesn't sound too daft. He has the capital, he has the factory, he has local skilled workforce, loyal potential customer base and a whole group of people pissed off with a rival product/management.

The only thing he maybe lacking is inclination.

He was evidently resolutely and bloody-mindedly against this plan when he owned TVR, so why would he have changed his mind now?

I would have expected something in the contract when he sold TVR that would prevent him from doing this. When our old boss sold the place I work at, he was prevented by contract from setting up in the same line of business for a period of years...makes sense really, and not un-common, I believe

This would not surpise me at all. PRW has been making noises about a new car from a long time now. Ideas for a 4x4 and all sorts...

He owns the land (not sure about buildings and contents) but if he could get the latter cheap then he's got an (almost) going concern ready to turn out just about anything.

What is important is that the site is not geared upto produce very complex, beautifully engineered vehicles. As has been mentioned, simple tubular backbone (stainless, PLEASE) and a fibreglass body. Crated motors, perhaps a Ford Duratec V6 and American V8.

There has to be a low cost version. Does an M3 really cost that much more to make than a 316i Coupe...? No, not really. Same car double the price. How about a V6 engined car on 16" wheels with no aero kit, cloth interior, no a/c basic radio, T5 for sub £30k and an all singing all dancing V8 with the trimmings for sub £50k. It'd sell with PRW behind it for sure but is it sustainable...?

But, roop, PW had the opportunity to do that with TVR but chose to take things upmarket instead. He also displayed a totally bloody-minded attitude towards crated engines, preferring instead to develop the S6.

So I repeat my earlier post - why on earth would he choose to do now what he chose not to do when he owned TVR?

Quite right Jon, there is no reason at all. He had it all and fluffed it. Wheeler liked making things - especially cars, then he got bored of cars but liked the cash. If he got fed up of buying Scotland and shooting stuff then my post refereed to the way he should do it
