Slave seals?Are they that bad?

My car is at Austecs at the moment having a new starter fitted.Whilst it was there i asked them to check for a noisy thrust bearing,as the noise got to the point that i thought that the bearing was about to break up.Anyway phoned them today to find out how they were getting on,and couldnt believe it when they told me they were half way through changing the slave seals.Thats the third set in a matter of two months.Are the quality of the seals that bad or am i just unlucky?

Cant do anything about it now as i would have thought by the end of this afternoon the job would have been done.But surely they should last longer than this?

Now that's interesting coz I took mine in to have the wiper blades renewed and I phoned 'em up to ask when I could pick it up and they said they were in the middle of replacing the off-side head gasket !

How old is the clutch plate?
If the fingers are getting a little tired on one side then it will cause uneven pressure on the slave and knock out the seals in no time at all.

Has the slave cylinder itself been changed? If there is any scoring (might not even be very noticible) it will kill the seals.

It had a brand new slave fitted by them two months ago.I did ask if the clutch was ok and was told it was fine and all the fingers were ok.

Looks like a might have same problem 5 months after last set fitted. Lost pressure for first half of pedal travel on Sunday morning and noticed some fluid under car I think. Will top up and bleed once I have a spare person around to assist and will then keep an eye out under the car, but pretty sure I know what the answer will be.

In 30 months Ive had 1 new clutch (replaced as a precaution), 1 master seal and 2 slave seals

Ours has played up lately too...

Are these things temperature sensitive or something???

If it is my slave seal gone again I think I will probably put in a new clutch as well this time just to be safe as didn't last time, think I did have a new cylinder though so not just the seals, will dig out the invoice.

MadMark is the Clevor Trevor set you fitted to yours the same clutch with an upgraded slave cylinder or is it an upgraded clutch as well?

Edited to say: Scrub that last question, just found their website and I see it is the Raceproved one mentioned by CM in the second post. So different from the standard one.

YES!!!

They are indeed that bad. mine has just 7000miles on the clock (2001 4.5LW) but now has gearbox out and new seals being replaced in the coming days.

It should last longer than this surely?

Silly silly question; but could using Castrol SRF have anything to do with the short-life span of seals? Just wondering cause I will go back to DOT3 or whatever it was originally, or am I speaking out of my arse? I really don't know what I am talking about, but can't seem to stop typing...for me, was it just coincidence that it all went pear shaped 1 month after replacing the entire system with SRF...so worth a stab at asking.

I dont think your talking out of your arse,as there was some mention on here a while back that some clutch fluids seem to be aggressive on the seals.

Think it was the other way though, the talk was of SRF being very kind to the seals and AP's own fluid not being great.
