When I shutdown my PC I get a screen saying that an upgrade is being installed and that windows will shutdown automatically when it has finished.

The machine then hangs and I have to pull the plug out.

How can I stop it trying to install this upgrade?

How long did you wait?

I've seen (on a nice clean virtual machine setup) it take 40 minutes once, so could be worth leaving overnight.

Tried that - didn't work.

Need to know how to stop it trying to install on shutdown.

Don't mind the installs while the machine is running.

Tell it to shut down, rather than install updates and shutdown. Should be an item on the shutdown menu box if you've not got the ultra fisher price interface enabled. No idea where it is if you have.

Go to start/run
services.msc
enter
stop the 'automatic updates' service
delete the contents of the c:/windows/softwaredistribution folder
start the 'automatic updates' service again

That should be that...
