Is a small leak from the cranshaft oil seal serious, will it contaminate the clutch, and does the gearbox and/or engine have to come out to replace, or can the be split and the job done in situ?

I know failure is common on under used cars due to hardening.

it can be fixed in situ, but it is stil a big job. if it is not leaking too much then it should not be a problem for the moment.

It is covered in Bible 2 and they should be able to drop the gearbox a la clutch change. Worth replacing clutch at the same time. Yes it can contaminate the clutch if left.
