I am looking to back up all my DVD's on to a normal copyable DVD so i can then ship them abroad without potentially losing all of them.
Now I have Acer laptop with a DVD R/W + - drive but it wont copy as i presume its got an anti piracy lock.
How can i either:
a) unlock it to copy any disk
b) or shall i just buy a generic external dvd copier and if so which one and how much?
Many thanks in advance to any help!

Dvd Shrink to rip it to your PC and shrink it to the right size for blank dvd's, then Nero or similar to burn the files back onto disc. DVD Shrink gets around most encryption, have found a couple that it hasn't coped with.
DVD ghost can also do that.. There are a fair few to choose from. head to download.com, or digital-digest.com to have a look around.

But I think Ghost is commercial so you have to pay - what I like about DVD Shrink is the price what with it being freeware

I agree..I hate buying software that I can get free! I had to buy Office for a course! Why? When Open Office is thoroughly, free, etc! There is so much open source, and free software, and a lot of people do not use it.
Thanks for that. Have downloaded and am sure it will be helpful.
But, when trying to burn a disk i get a copy protection warning. I believe this is the encryption issue i have on my dvd drive.
Its a Matshita UJ840D DVD RW + & -.
Is there anyway i can get rid of this protection on the drive?
