I don't own a TVR but I do have a place in Scotland and I am in IT.

Bottom line is its very hard to make real money in Scotland from IT, god knows I have been trying for years. I spend about 9 months of the year working abroad and 3 months in Scotland. Hopefully one day I will be able to work in Scotland full time. I miss it.

I'm a Scot, live in Scotland and don't have a TVR but do have a Porsche.

Depending on which part of Scotland you're in, the standard of living can be quite high and there are some supberb open roads. On the down side, the weather's mostly sh*te, and the culture's very self-destructive. Sooner I can move back to Holland with the missus the better...

Co-incidentally, the only ITer I do know that had a TVR back in 2000 had to sell it when the IT market reached saturation point up here and has now been unemployed for 6 months.

The grass is always greener....

Cheers Guys,

I'm aware that the IT market ain't to good up north but then again it's stuffed where ever you go. I know theres still a great deal of work around Livingstone for the interactive TV companies.

Just have this strong desire to get out of the goddam south east since I'm fed up with the lifestyle and that fact the London is the epicenter for everything.

THE DIARY OF AN ENGLISHMAN LIVING IN THE HIGHLANDS
"OUR FIRST WINTER "

DEC 20TH
It's starting to snow. The first of the season and the first we've seen for years the wife and I took out our hot toddies and sat on the porch watching the fluffy soft flakes drift gently down clinging to the trees and covering the ground. It's so beautiful and peaceful.

DEC 24th
We awoke to a lovely blanket of crystal white glistening snow covering as far as the eye could see. What a fantastic sight, every tree and bush covered with a beautiful white mantle. I shovelled snow for the first time ever and loved it. I did both our driveway and the pavement. Later that day a snowplough came along and accidentally covered up our driveway with compacted snow from the street. The driver smiled and waved. I waved back and shovelled it away again. The children next door built a snowman with coal for eyes and a carrot for a nose, and had a snowball fight, a couple just missed me and hit the car so I threw a couple back and joined in their fun.

DEC 26th
It snowed an additional 5 inches last night and the temperature dropped to around minus 8 degrees. Several branches on our trees and bushes snapped due to the weight of the snow. I shovelled our driveway again. Shortly afterwards the snowplough came by and did his trick again. Much of the snow is now a brownish - grey.

JAN 1st
Warmed up enough during the day to create some slush which soon became ice when the temperature dropped again. Bought snow tyres for both our cars. Fell on my butt in the driveway. Went to a physio but nothing was broken.

JAN 5th
Still cold. Sold the wife's car and bought her a 4x4 to get her to work. She slid into a wall and did considerable damage to the right wing. Had another 8 inches of white stuff last night. Both vehicles are covered in salt and iced up slush that b*stard snowplough came by twice today. Where's that bloody shovel.

JAN 9th
More f*****g snow. Not a tree or bush on our property that hasn't been damaged. Power was off most of the night. Tried to keep from freezing to death with candles and a paraffin heater which tipped over and nearly torched the house. I managed to put the flames out but suffered 2nd Degree burns on my hands. Lost all my eye brows and eyelashes. Car hit a f******g deer on the way to casualty and was written off.

JAN 13th
F****** b******d white shite just keeps on coming down. Have to put on every article of clothing just to go to the post box the little s**ts next door ambushed me with snowballs on the way back - I'll shove that carrot so far up the little prick's arse it'll take a good surgeon hours to find it. If I ever catch the arsehole that drives the snowplough I'll chew open his chest and rip out his heart with my teeth. I think the b******d hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shovelling and then he accelerates down the street like Michael "f*****g" Shumacher and buries the f******g driveway again.

JAN 17th
16 more sodding inches of f*****g snow and f*****g ice and f*****g sleet and god knows what other white shite fell last night. I am in court in 3 months time for assaulting the snowplough driver with an ice-pick. Can' t move my f*****g toes. Haven't seen the sun for 5 weeks. Minus 20 and more f*****g snow forecast

Why Scotland? Fair enough, it's a great country, but you don't need to go so far to get away from it all.

I've just bought a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere in the north of England, and it's bliss. And when the cash from selling my house further south finally comes, a TVR will be on the way. The only problem being one of the Tuscan or Tamora variety.

Working in IT. What, all of it?

As has been said, scotland's got it's fair share of IT people. Not sure about down south, but aberdeen has opportunities if you're prepared to work for it. There seems to be a gap in the market for Network/PC support for small companies.

Main IT market is in Edinburgh as its the second largest financial centre in Europe. The IT market up here is very stagnant at the moment, however rumour has it that either the Royal Bank of Scotland or HBOS are about to embark on a £300 million IT spend.

See, the problem is that we don't get enough sodding snow anymore in Scotland, which used to compensate (partially) for the God-awful summers.

Now it's just crap, grey weather come Spring, Summer or Fall.....

More doom and gloom I'm afraid Steve. My Brother works in Web Methods - lives in Sheffield but has only had contracts in Amsterdam (shame), France and Amersham in the last year or so.

He says that it is picking up in Manchester at the moment (but who'd want to live there ).

You are probably doing the right thing - decide where you want to live and sort the work thing out second - work to live and all that.

fatsteve, have you ever been to scotland? Most of them hate the English I'm afraid (many chips upon the shoulder).

Wouldn't ever do it myself, but good luck to you if you choose. I spent 3 years living near Newcastle, and got sick of the uncosmopolitan South bashing, shit climate, and women who had developed the extra thick dermis to cope with said climate. I do admit that wearing no tights and short sleeves in sub zero temperatures is a remarkable traight, but the extra 2 stone associated with that adaptation didn't make it a worthy trade off.

Having said that, there are plenty of northerners who are absolutely great, but enough tossers to really put me off the place.

Saying most hate English people is a bit over the top. Yes there are a few but not the majority. As for the women and the weather well....quite.

DanH, A bit OTT old chap, certainly we rag the poor immigrant english (flotsam and jetsam of the continent and all that; can't even win the games they invented; got a chip on their shoulders 'cause it's the Scots who invented everything) but to say that every Scot hates the english is a wee bit too much...... Certainly if you go to what remains of the Gorbals or to certain council estates in the capital you'd get more than a ragging............ but the english aren't exactly free of bias either are they? old chap!!!!

Don't you find that sad though. that your fellow scots would wish physically violence on people from another country - simply because they are from another country.

Anyway - I am going to Twickenham on Saturday - so lets see whose laughing Monday (Can't win games we invented eh?)

I am sure there are parts of England where I might get a good kicking for not being a local. But in London at least we tend to be much more multicultural and don't fight over the last swig of meths.

Well as far as Twickers is concerned we'll probably lose, but we won't cry in our whisky because of some "celtic conspiracy that has robbed us of the championship again" as do some of GBs immigrants. And Is seem to remember a few games where the immigrants lost rather badly! Even had my hand in one once, as a schoolboy that is, back in the dim dark ages!
Wait for Lansdowne Road though!!!!

And as far as the kickings are concerned I've experienced more racial hatred in Lunnun than I know of against the english in scotland! but its all IMHO!

Bad manners anyway to give someone a kicking just because they're born somewhere else, smacks of Texan Biblebeltism doesn't it!!!

Uncosmopolitan South Bashing? Christ get off your high horse mate! From what I remember of London and working in the City was getting pissed every lunchtime, getting double pissed on a Friday at Browns and then off for a curry down Brick Lane. Unless that was just the Aussies I worked with, and the likes of you went to the latest performance art show where someone pisses into a pint glass on stage and drinks it! Or was that still Browns!!
Ah to be Uncosmopolitan!!!
I love Newcastle, I love Scotland and I loved living in London. It's up to you what you make of it!!!!!!!
