For those PH'ers that are in the Cambridge area, I was wondering if those new cameras that they have installed on the A14 at the Milton interchange (A10) are actually speed cameras....?

They look rather odd and I am not sure. The sign for the construction work says "Speed Camera Not in Use" so I kinda assume that they are, but they look just like the standard Infrared security cameras! They are on overhead poles on the road, have two large cylinder shapes either side of the camera, and the camera itself looks like one of those you get on the side of office buildings!

I am not really up on my technology, but it does strike me as odd that they say speed cameras on the signs, but look like traffic control ones to me... What do you recon? Speed cameras or traffic control ones?

Anyone been past them recently?

Cheers,

Paul

P.S. The pole they are on is taller than an artic and they have vertical bar on which the camera is mounted - so they are effectively over the carriageway. No black / grey boxes on the pole or at the bottom (but might not have fitted them yet) and the pole itself is painted bright blue and is fairly ornate - not your usual street furniture, wouldnt look out of place in a town centre for example....

Yes they are speed cameras of the SPECS type that have registration plate recognition then average a cars time between at least two cameras. I was surprised to come across then the weekend before last on a Sunday night in the dark. My GPS camera detector did not pick them up - I suppose because they have only just been installed. On yellow poles IIRC.

Sounds like SPECS to me - digital scameras that average your speed across a set distance.

Thats the annoying part - when all the workers have gone home for the night and traffic is very light its so easy to creep over the 40 or 50 limit and earn yourself 3 points.

Certainly is. My neighbour just picked up £60 fine and 3 points from going through roadworks on the M60 north of Manchester - at 6.00am.

Also out this weekend on the PH5 Tankersley run. There are some SPECS cameras around the corner - and I swear it must have been a mile between the cameras!! If you did not know what SPECS looked like - there would be a ticket in the post

A freind of mine was also done there
58 in a 50 at 9am on a Sunday.

A little too harsh IMO.

Yes, i was hoping they were only put there for the road works, but they look to permanant so i think they're there to stay, which is a bummer as thats my testing ground but i dont think we can get done yet as the signs say not in use, IIRC the poles are blue

They are permanent otherwise they would just use the front or rear facing boxes. Unless they are becoming really nasty. The cameras are live at the weekend when the road works are ongoing, but not during the weeksuspicious. Well that's my viewpoint, so be careful.

Has anyone seen the cameras between Bingham and Nottingham on the A52?

They're also double barreled IR up on poles, but there's one on each side of the road and they face each other at just above lorry height.

Really confuses me!

Looks like they're taking pics of each other!

Is this perhaps something that checks that HGV's aren't too tall for a height restricted motorway bridge or soemthing simmilar?

That was my first thought, come to think of it, i've just realised where there's a low bridge nearby, but no on that actual road, which is confusing.
