Its something the US chaps like to do, every few thousand miles they'll replace their fuel filter with a little contraption, and fill it with a cleaning solution. They run the engine for a minute or two on this solution, it runs through the engine and gets rid of some of the crap that builds up inside.

I don't think its quite so popular over here as we have cleaning additives in the diesel we buy, but its still a pretty good idea. I've been toying with the idea of buying some, and pouring it into my fuel filter to see whats what.

Thanks for the linky, very interesting!

Re. diesel purge, I did read a couple of times that mineral ATF was quite good to use in this capacity. I did try filling a new filter with it once and it didn't seem to make anything worse, this was on a fairly well used rover L series diesel. ('94 218sld)

How about the additives like Redex or similar to "clean" a diesel?
Any views?
I know that there are additives in common or garden diesel and petrol but will a higher concentration that these give be of any benefit as an occasional treatment?

what worries me about that engine is it is showing signs of sludge something diesels are not even prone to,one to many late or missed oil changes in my opinion not even a merc engine will put up with that whats the mileage?if only it had SNAKE oil in it would have been good for another 200k,he,he...excess blow by on the pistons will cause that condition (piston failure) also not always injector failure or spray pattern/clogging.
