My chim is a category D write off. I want to buy the car back from the insurance but don't know anything about it. Can anyone tell me how to go about getting a car back on the road and what are the costs and requirements involved in doing so? Will I loose my reg no.?

Hi David,
I've had a couple of cat d's.
Basically a cat d is the lowest classification, and generally cosmetic. For instance, my s3c, accoding to the insurance company was written off as not financially viable to repair.

It was owned by 'psychobert' on ph, who pranged it, where it sustained frontal damage. All it needed was a small repair to the front nearside of the bonnet, a new headlight, a new mirror, and that was it. I mentioned I wouldn't mind having a go at getting it back on the road. Psychobert simply mentioned he wanted to buy it back, they gave him a price, I gave him the money, bobs your uncle.

The registration plate stays with the car, and if it's a cat d it doesn't even need a vic test to authenticate it's identity.

PM me if you like.

IIRC Pher silverbackmike bought at least one Cat D car from a salvage dealer. Drop him a PM, I'm sure he'll help you if he can

You'll just have to tell your insurance company that you want to buy it back, then get it repaired. Cat D doesn't need any inspections and you still keep hold of your V5, so it wont make any difference to you. The only way you'll know is if you do a hpi check, it will come up on the history. Oh yeah unfortunately, now matter how well its repaired it will be worth around 25 percent less now

Damage is rear end and £8K. but that because the quote was for a whole new rear end which isn't needed

I would assume it is negotiable anyway - they quote a payout for the car and would then deduct a sum for you to keep the car. You then haggle a bit. It is less hassle for them, plus they would only get salvage auction value minus both auction and transportation fees. I'd have thought you'd be looking at £2k max to buy it.
