Well folks, I picked up the chimaera tonight, went from Bristol to Portchester, picked it up and drove it home, approx 160 miles.

Inital thoughts are that it's a very nice car, I can feel a couple of small things to sort out, but nothing nasty, it drives very well indeed, and did the 160 miles very comfortably.

I'll give it a damn good service, the chassis needs a strip and good few coats of por15, no doubt I'll be asking a few questions

I bought it for a very good price, the owner has only covered about 4000 miles in 3 years and genuinely wanted it to go to a good home, which it has, but I can definately say it will be driven spiritedly through the winter.

Anyway, there we go, hello again chaps.

ps. One thing.......it has a small clonk over rough roadsurfaces seemingly to the rear of the box, ?bush or something?? I know, I can't help myself, I'll have it on axle stands tomorrow.

Mine had a strange clonk when I picked up but
after a couple of days I realised it would do it
when stationary and with the engine off ? Turned
out to be the petrol tank expanding or contracting
and making a very metalic sounding clonk.

Mine used to clonk over big bumps, speed humps and potholes - had it looked at a couple of times but no one was abe to work out why. Turned out to be the ARB. I didnt KNOW this of course but Ive just had rose jointed ARB drop links fitted and no more clonk !

Check your diff bushes. I had a similar clonk and my bushes were split. Replaced over the weekend with Poly bushes and all sorted.
Still get the usual transmission shunt/clonk but nothing now when on rough ground or potholes etc.

I had similar on one side at the rear, turned out I had a shocker leaking, had them both rebuilt - no more noise.

Ditto - spent loads on all sorts of trial and error stuff including new shockers but the knocking only ceased once Steve's drop-links were fitted. I'm not saying that all rear knocking is ARB related but it's certainly something to bear in mind.

Zippee - whats the 'usual transmission shunt/clonk' ?? I've had sleepless night about a definate 'clonk' sound that I get every so often. Haven't got a TVR but a Ginetta with a RV8 and box and cosworth diff so its all similar transmission stuff I believe.

Any info appreciated.

Simon.

I'm on my second Chim thats makes a clonking noise when going over mild lumps and bumps that are usually found on your average B road. The first was a S reg and this one's a T.
I changed the shocks on the S reg and it still did it so i just lived with it.
On the T reg i have changed the shocks (Protech), fitted poly bushes all round inc the diff and steve heaths drop links (anti roll bar bushes are good) and the noise is still there. furious
The only other things that i haven't touched that move with the suspension is the driveshafts but i fail to see how they can make this noise.

Obviously i have checked for the proverbial golf ball rattling around under the fuel tank (before the griff boys get here biglaugh)

Else
Have you found that replacing the diff bushes with poly ones has created or made worse the diff whine?

Dave, it doesn't whine now and didn't before the bushes were changed.

Cool
Reason I asked was because I know a Griff owner who changed to polys but said the whine was terrible. In the end he got the front lower bushes made from the same tougher compound as the top one and is now well happy with it.

Bushes shouldn't cause diff whine should they? Surely thats a sign of the actual diff being worn?
