When I bought my 94 4.0 Chim in April last year I was told it had a recon starter recently fitted. All was well until June when it started just clicking when the key was turned, this was 1 or 2 clicks initially but became erratic, 2 clicks sometimes 20 another, it appeared to improve after car had run for a while. Sometimes it worked perfectly.
Had another alleged recon starter fitted in Aug and all was well again until problem with seized solenoid in Nov. This was replaced and all was well again.

Guess what, the clicky starter is back again, turn key and very heavy click, can feel through the gear stick but no turnover of starter. At night with lights on there is no dimming of lights when the solenoid clicks until eventually the starter does turn.

Any ideas?

Did they fit an heat shield? How good are the starter connections?

Hi Westy,

May sound stupid but have you tried the battery. I had an mr2 before the chim. And when the battery was on the way out it did just that. Clicked a few times and then managed to crank the engine. Sometimes it just clicked. The battery had enough power for the lights but not for the starter motor. Though you did say there was no dimming of your lights. If energy is drawn in the starter the lights should dim.....
Anyway a spare battery maybe worth a try.

Hi, i had a very similar problem with my V8 landy, it turned out to be an earth fault. I fitted an earth strap direct from the chassis to one of the bolts holding the starter on. Is this fitted/missing from yours??

Sounds like a loose earth/connection to the starter to me. The high current needs a tight connection to do it's thang.

Yep, my 93 Chim had a bad earth, get some thick cable and bolt it to the engine and the other end to the negative battery terminal and try it then.

Thought would bring this to the top instead of starting a new thread!!!, My chimaera has not been started for 2 months due to big overhaul of wishbones/brakes/diff etc. Went to turn the engine over today as have done an oil change and need to prime the oil pump and the battery was dead. I have put it on charge and just went to try again and the starter motor is just clicking loudly!!!, It has never done this before or has it ever had problems starting when hot. Is this down to a low charged battery?? or could something have siezed due to the time its been standing????
cheers
Rich

It was a seized solenoid on mine, £18 plus vat exchange. Its a Bosch part for a Landrover starter. Getting the top bolt off the starter was the hardest part. Took the solenid off and it had rusted, leave the inner attached to the starter, just clean it up, and take the outer for the exchange. With mine the spring loadwd contact had seized in.

Hope this helps.
