Hand brake... is the Griff supposed to have one?

Hi Guys,

Car is 96 Griff 500 and as you may have guessed from the post title, has a completely pointless handbrake!

the car is in the local indie getting it's annual service / healthcheck and MOT, but failed on the handbrake (only thing mind you!) garage have checked everything and tried to adjust it so that it holds, but no luck. They are now saying that I will need 2 x new rear calipers @ £285 each plus VAT plus Fitting! anybody got any good tricks to try before I spend this much?

Also looking into re-conditioning the existing calipers as option.

Give TVRCarparts a call for a price on recon callipers should be a lot less than new.

If they tried to 'adjust' it then they probably don't know what they're doing. There is an automatic adjuster built into the caliper, and the only manual adjuster is on the cable to take up stretch which you shouldn't normally fiddle with. It may be that the self-adjusting mechanism has seized, in which case you need to get the calipers replaced/refurbished, this needs a special tool to reassemble it buth otherwise nothing special about it. Or it may be that the cable has simply been done up too tight and isn't allowing enough slack for the automatic adjuster in the caliper to work. If they're in the habbit of tightening the cable this is quite likely.

You can manually adjust the automatic adjuster if it's stiff. Just beware it's not a long term solution.
