XP Login Script
Discussion
On logging in to my network this morning, i now ahve around 40 new shortcuts for various things that the company has done.
Is there anyway i can bypass this part of the script so i do not get 40 shortcuts on my desktop everyday.
If not is there any script i can run so i can just predefine which shortcuts they are and run that!!!.
And they have changed the default colour of the desktop to bright green, which is not nice to look at can this be changed automatically?

Unlikely, unless you have admin rights.
The script is run by the server when you log onto the network

I have admin roghts on local machine! So i want to try and run a local script to clean up all the mess IT have done.
Problem is that if they have installed a logon script at the server, then next time you log off and on, it will run the script and you are back where you started.

Why have they put shortcuts on the desktop ? surely if these are shortcuts to network drives they should use drive mappings then you just go through my computer to access data keeping the desktop clean ?
They are just shortcuts to various pages on the intranet site! They should have just put them into the favourites but... logical thinking disappears again
some are for network drives which i dont even have access to so are just dead shortcuts!

Sounds like they have applied a group policy to standardise the machines. If you try and alter things you may well fall foul of company IT policy. The policy will have been applied at domain level so I'm afraid you're probably stuck with it.
I am not bothered about falling foul of the IT policy as i am in a argument over that anyway! see other thread
As others have said it's likely that this is the result of:
A logon script run from the authenticating DC when you log-in
A Group Policy object invoking a script
The only way to circumvent the behaviour is to "fix" it once it has happened by either:
1: Manually deleting the shortcuts
2: Scripting the deletion of the shortcuts
For option 2 you could bang something together in VBScript using the FileSystemObject and then enumerate the files in %systemdrive%documents and settings\%username%desktop and then invoking delete for each instance of a file with a .url extension.

Why would your IT department change the background colour and also add 40 shortcuts to the desktop? That doesn't make a great deal of sense to me. Do they realise they have done this? This isn't a group policy object that was designed to add the shortcuts in IE and someone has made a mistake and added them to the desktop?
I can understand using a standardised desktop background as people often have inappropriate backgrounds if this isn't done.
A simple batch file to delete the shortcuts is the only logical thing.

talk to the it people they might actually be human - trying to get around what theyve done is not going to make you friends and may get u in trouble with your companys it policy. there might be a valid reason for what theyve done ( although admittedly its sounds cack! )
Tried that one and got a load of bull sh1t

I have got the bat file sorted, just need a way to change the background colour automatically now!
drop the cmd /bat file in the startup folder in start menu and see if that works. changing the background colour is a little trickier. You might need to script a sendkeys vbs script file to do the modification like a recording.

IT Policy's are often not defined by the IT people. The most common originator for such things seems to be a combination of middle management trying to look useful (junior management are too busy, but love to make suggestions on it and director level is busy doing important stuff) and HR being completely overzelus; personally I'd keep on top of blocking anon proxies, porn and stuff but ya know.
Same with e-mail, the only time I'd be interested in a message is if the mail server chokes on it or it becomes stuck in the processing queue, then I'm more interested in message headers, attachment formats & sizes rather than the actual content; it could well be a steamy love letter between someone working for the company and their mistress... all I'd be interested in is why that message broke the system... and would, after getting the item delivered (or bounced) be none the wiser as to the content.
Again same for a migration, if I'm having to watch raw mime feeds floating up a screen it'll be going to fast for me to actually make anything out; I'm just keeping an eye out for it failing (and then investigating why) or completing OK.
Guess I'm just "Old School" in some respects lol.
But the fact that so many useless icons have appeared on your desktop would help you figure out who dreamed up the idea and/or was involved in dictating what the policy should put and where. Personally I'd have a friendly word with the IT people, they're probably as annoyed with the policy as you are and be more than happy, if possible, put you back under the older one.

Looks like your issues with your IT staff need to be at board level, not messageborad level.
sounds about right! If you've signed the it policy ( havent read the entire other thread ) ure asking for trouble trying to get round what theyve done but that doesnt stop you asking for an explanation why its been done and arguing with that.

I believe this is being raised at the next senior managers meeting... Which i have been drafted in to attend for some reason.. I have also been drafted in to contribute to the new IT policy..
