Are you a director and is it "your company"?

Just a heads up on this. There have been increasing rumblings that laptops will become a taxable benefit.

There was a Home Computing Scheme which was abolished at the last budget. I managed to get mine through with days to go!

Put it through as a computer (laptop/desktop unspecified) and claim it as you would a work based desktop, if ever you are inspected and someone asks the question (which is highly unlikely) make sure that the laptop is on your desk or in your car (or lost or stolen or with a colleague). Don't try and do their job for them, if you have half a chance of justifying something as an expense put it through and wait to be told you have made a 'mistake'.

PS I am obviously not an accountant and in no position to give advice that could be relied on in court.

What has ben definitely decided is thaat use of a SECOND mobile phone is now a benefit in kind.

However, the question is about whether the business can claim the cost of a laptop - the answer is, yes, of course - through the Capital Allowance claims system.
Whether a benefit in kind arises should be down to whether it is used for personal purposes by the director/employee.

Use at home might make them more suspicious that it isn't "wholly and necessarily" for business use too...

You might need to take it home for "security" reasons.

You might actually run the business from home.

The point I was making was that, even if there is some private useage, for Corporation Tax purposes, the laptop is full claimable under the Capital Allowance regulations. The Private Useage element (if any)will be taxed under the PAYE Benefit in Kind rules.

I am guessing the private use in comparison to the business use is minimal for most people?
