Just about to service the chim, I know it sounds a bit odd, and every 4.0 should be the same, but what oil should I use.

Previously I've used 5w40, anyone have any particular preference or greater knowledge?

Thanks folks,

Mike.

Valvoline 20/50 I know is widely recomended for the RV8 Mike. Jeff Morgan uses it in his modified 430, I'm using it in my 4.5. thumbup

Look in the "general TVR stuff forum". Excellent advice by Simon and Guy from Opie Oils regarding oils to use.

Well.....................

Extremely impressed Wyn, I'm not just saying that as it's the latest one. It feels very well put together yikes Yes it does, honest..
I was under the impression it would feel a lot slower than the 390se, and even more so, the V8S, but in reality it isn't.

It is more subtle though, both the 390 and v8s were like being hit in the face with a mallet, whilst this thing woofles along rather than screams.

I must be getting old as I find that quite a good thing....

I've just taken some rainy pictures so I'll pop one on. I know it's only a boggo 4 litre, but for what I paid for it I cannot in any way fault it.

You are most welcome to have a go driving It will be a bit different to your monster, but I reckon you will be pleasantly surprised, I was. (And I can get 2 sets of my clubs in it hehe)

I always use Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w/50. This was recommended to me (amongst others) by Fernhurst TVR who use it in all the Griff/Chimaera V8's.

And you can pick it up in Halfords.

That Mobil 1 stuff is good but it's £35 for 4L where Valvoline is £20 for 5!!

Me too ...

Plus Halfords had 20% off Mobil 1 last week for both the 0-40 and the 15-50 motorsport

It should not be neccesary to use a 20/50 its to dated and (HAD ITS DAY) as not had much development for years, cold flow is terrible.even the RV8 benefits from a more modern oil (think of the camshaft)at least 10/40 semi syns a much greater oil than lawn mower 20/50,now im going to be accused of pi*sing on everyone,s fireworks sorry bout that.yes i use MOBIL 1 too.although 0/40 is to thin better with the 15/50.

scratchchin Might give J.E a ring see what they recommend. Don't want to compromise with this engine really.

Treat you car to Silkolene Pro S 10w50 - the best available on the market. Opie Oils will have the oil delivered next day, and not quite as expensive as Mobil 1.

For what it is worth, a well known and respected engine builder will not guarantee his engines unless Silkolene is used.

Well worth a try.

Shell 10/40 s/s, my Tvr indy swears by it, at a fraction of the price of Mobil 1.

20/50 isn't a good oil for lawnmowers. Briggs and Stratton amongst others recommend SAE 30 for their lawnmower engines
