Hi,

we have a mac server we want to add to our w2k3 network. apparantly as our network is blah.local domain we have to add the mac into dns so it doesnt add the blah.local to itself. does anyone know what i'm talking about and if so how do I add it to our dns so it doesnt pick up the blah.local automatically?

thanks

I think if you're using samba the relationship between the dns FQDN and the domain isn't as strict as with a windows box, at least not if you're setting up manually, I'm afraid I don't know what kind of wizzards or whatever macs have. Is it picking up the wrong dns sufix from dhcp, or not picking it up at all, or ending up as mac.local.yourdomain.local or something? Or are you on static IP's?

Edit Having read your post again, I'm still not 100% sure if I understand but I think maybe you need to set the hostname to one with no domain suffix, and let dhcp assign the suffix. Assuming you're running the w2k3 dhcp service. If the w2k3 dhcp and dns are set to request/allow dynamic updates it should put an entry in dns for you.
