Crevat's to Open Office.

1. Make sure the people using it are not Office power users, their embeded macro's not working and subtle differences between OO.o Writer and Office Word will drive them insane.

2. Are you American? If yes go for the latest version. If no, download the 1.x legacy version. Open Office 2.x has a very neat bug, it will ONLY spell check in American English even if native language support and interface language is set to say Cyrillic.
