Hi Ed, the recommended oil for the RX8 is 5W-30 semi-synthetic (don't use fully synthetic). Most cars are using roughly a litre every 2000 miles or so - unless your other half is doing lots of short journeys? I check the oil on mine no more than once a month.

Ah

Mazda have recommended that you only use a mineral oil in any rotary.

I use Castrol GTX in mine....much cheaper as well

Many of you may have seen the Mazda statements on Rotarynews.com surrounding the recalls of RX-8's in the USA,

http://rotarynews.com/?q=node/view/82

http://rotarynews.com/node/view/826

The implications for owners are very very serious which led me to contact Mazda for an official comment on the situation with our own members cars here in the UK and Europe and below is the answer I received.

Dear Clive

Further to your e-mail dated 22nd August 2006, and our subsequent telephone conversation, I am now able to provide you with further information regarding the Mazda RX-8 recall in the USA.

As you can probably appreciate we only receive information on recalls/service campaigns etc that affect UK vehicles as it would be an impossible
task (and largely irrelevant) to keep track of such campaigns for vehicles in other markets around the world. However, as the UK sells the majority of Mazda RX-8's in Europe we are of course interested in this USA recall.

Having investigated this matter with our European head office I am informed that this recall will only affect the USA market and that the recall relates to the emission laws in that market (which are different from European legislation). There are therefore no plans to launch a recall in the UK.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information, but you should be aware that I will not be back in the office until Thursday 7th September.

Worth pointin out that the definition of 'mineral oil' in Japan (where the directive comes from) is different to ours here!

Japan 'mineral' means our mineral and semi-synth (i.e. hydrocracked).
Japan 'synthetic' is real manufactured oil.

Slight aside here, but I was talking to mechanics from an F1 team and remarked they all used fully synthetic oil, no?

It turns out they don't!! They said they use mineral based oil as it seems to have a better performance latitude under extreme conditions- which gives them a greater safety window if they lose an oil cooler or something in a minor shunt.

I was pretty shocked, but then they change the oil every five minutes!

As for me I just use API-SL and change it every 2k...

That's the key really for running real mineral oil (not semi) - change it regularly.

The Renesis isn't as much of a problem as the turbo'd 13Bs - the operating temps are much lower so the oil doesn't breakdown as much. Once it's broken down under high temps though it won't recover!

I've been using 76 Racing mineral oil in mine since I got it and change it every 3k but it's not cheap and castrol changed every 2k would probable be cheaper and as good!

Indeed he has some quality oils on offer, and at a significant discount to members of the RX8 Owners Club: www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=941
