Stopping Desktop Icons updating?

I seem to be having my desktop icons update almost everytime I open up a file browsing window. I found once a cure that involved increasing the memory allocation (or something similar) to them so they didn't do it. However they are doing it it again.

I have 59 icons on my desktop (four and a half columns on a 1280x1024 display), 55 of them are either normal windows icons or shortcuts, the other 4 are very small items between 50k-200k.

Does anyone know of the fix to stop this happening or know of any other?
