Dear Sir

RE: Incident 523 on 12th November 2006

I wish to write to say how grateful I am to the officers who attended the scene of the above incident when my TVR Cerbera burst into flames coming off the A1.

Officers from Thorpe Wood Police Station acted swiftly and professionally to secure the scene and were extremely good in looking after my fiancée and 6 year old stepson who were in the car at the time.

It is my understanding that under the current points system that the officers concerned would receive no credit for their attendance on site, yet would be credited issuing a fixed penalty notice to someone for going 1 MPH over the national speed limit on a straight road.

Every time officers attend a road traffic incident they put themselves at risk, due to the inherent dangers of being on foot on the road. Furthermore had my passengers and I been trapped in the vehicle your officers may have been obliged to put themselves at risk to release us from the car.

None of this could have been done by CCTV or by a speed camera. Thank you to your officers they can feel proud to have done an excellent job, please let’s say yes to Traffic Police and no to speed cameras which do not capture poor driving, only capture speed.

Please, let your officers’ use their discretion and move away from this Blairism (Sir Ian or Tony) before your best officers leave the force due to the political correctness gone mad which appears to be sweeping the force.

Yours sincerely

200 points a month for a copper to justify his existence.

3 points for a fixed penalty notice.
0 points for pulling someone from the wreck of their burning car.

Go figure

It's for real. Not enough points one month = warning. Second time = off department. Gone are the days of discression. Beware the end of the month.

So if they actually PREVENTED any crimes they get no points. But if they let the crime happen (not that I am suggesting this happens) then catch the bugger, then 3 points...

Full of self serving scum who strive to measure the unmeasurable, in order to keep the spin flowing. Anyone with half a brain cell will realise ridiculous systems like this can only serve to degrade and alienate our police service. Unfortunately the monkeys running the country appear not to be able to scrape up that 1/2 brain cell between them.

I'd have through bonus points for the second one. We do indeed live in a strange country don't we.

Somewhat f***ed up by political animals with a woeful disregard for what the public want, and seriously skewed sense of priorities, in positions of authority in Blue Uniforms...

So just what is the full points system then? Anyone care to spill the beans?

Read it and weep

This is dated sometime last year so it's possible that the Brucy Bonuses have changed. Still, 5 points for catching someone not wearing a seat belt, compared to just 2 points of catching an illegal immigrant, shoplifter, bail breaker etc. does seem to say something about the priorites assigned to officers by those sitting on their arses and generating sound bites for the media.

Work is not points led at my place! We are here to assist the public and make our road safer - not reach targets. That's not the same as saying I will not book you if you break the law! ;o)

If you book me because you think I'm driving like a 2@ then that's a fair cop, it's your job. If you book me because you need 3 more points this month to avoid an interview without coffee, then that's f'ing appalling IMHO.

(That's a generic 'you' meaning plod in general, not you specifically).

Is it? You just assume that Chief Constable is a bloke, nothing on their website to say otherwise.

No doubt they have me down as a sexist pig now.

Telegraph article said:
Supt Mick Doyle, head of Roads Policing, said yesterday: "The performance system enables stretched officers to prioritise their work.

"It reflects the importance of offences that are the main causes of death on our roads.

"The Roads Policing department makes up three per cent of the force. Their priority is to make the road safer and reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads."

Since when? I thought the job of the police was to prevent and detect crime. That's what I want the police to do, anyway. If that helps to reduce KSIs then fine, but I want them to focus on crime not KSIs.

It says road police are only 3% of the force. That doesn't seem excessive to me.
