I read in my local paper last night that the council are using a new type of salt this year. They’ve put a sugary coating on it so it sticks to the road and doesn’t wash away in the rain! If it sticks to the roads it’s going to stick brilliantly to bikes! Has anybody got any ideas what this stuff might do to our bikes?

I live in Hertford, not sure where else it’s going to be used.

Not a clue but it sounds like a sweet idea.

We had this last year where I live (kent) and while it does stay stuck to the road for longer, when it's dry it's a lot more slippy - lots of fun in the car, expecting it to be bad on a bike.

Sounds like the beet mixed stuff that's been outlawed in pretty much every other country in the known universe because its dangerously slippery.

Like some of our roadsurfaces which have been outlawed in pretty much every other country in the known universe because its dangerously slippery.

Its a winning combination.

Sounds like its going to be a fun winter.

I'm not looking forward to de-glazing my bike every week!

I have heard a couple of rumours that this stuff plays havoc with aluminium. I certainly know my car brake lines failed as an aluminium connector in the line rotted through. (Not quite as exciting as it sounds) The garage that fixed the car was just one of the places that said they had noticed a distinct rise in such events since the use of beet pulp with the salt.
