Speed cameras on M6 around J34?
Discussion
Major roadworks started recently on the M6 around J34 with a mandatory 50 limit. At the side of the northbound carriageway they've installed cameras every 200 yards or so along the roadworks (for over 4 miles), pointing across the carriageway and slightly down. They look like surveillance cameras, but unlike SPECS they don't have infrared lights attached. Signage says they are speed cameras, but is this true? They presumably can't see number plates in the dark?
Why so many?

They are the 'normal'small box cameras on straight poles - they look just like the surveillance cameras you get in city centres these days. Having them every 200 yards seems like enormous overkill if they are just there for spotting stopped vehicles or accidents....
Unfortunately the road works are going to be there for months yet, so we'll have forgotten what 'normal service' was by the time they're removed!
