Ok a slighly misleading thread title but here is the deal.

The interest shown in my old 944 for sale has been so underwhelming I'm thinking about a pos track car idea.

The idea came from a comment a mate made. I said I'd love an E30 M3 one day for track & road frollics if the budget allowed for a nice one & he said well surely your old 944 with a few tweeks would offer similar thrills & power to weight ratio. hmmmm

So starting with stripping some weight from the old girl ( dump the interior, GRP bonnet & plexi glass tailgate from 944 racers), sorting the suspension (poss Koni or Leda dampers & turbo torsions & ARB's) liberating a few more gee gees and could get down to sub 1100kg and approx 180bhp for a budget of £ hundreds rather than £ thousands.

ok hardly a rocket ship but it shuld be achiveable for a price that would buy 3-4 968CS's & I could get it to handle exactly the same as a 968CS with the right bits, plus if my calculations are right 200kg less weight than the CS should begin to make up for the 60bhp deficit & it should be standard S2 quick anyway. ( & I ve got a spare engine if i manage to blow the present one!)

My dilema is im already starting down the route of an old 16v Mk2 Golf track car which would be lighter, more powerful, more agile and far cheaper for bits, but crucially not real wheel drive so no power over steer frollics.

Help me with my dilema porker PH'ers the very megre lizard budget is so tight it squeaks & can't afford to have both- (although I'm working on it!)

Good idea.
I would be amazed you manage to get below 1100 kgs knowing that a stripped out Turbo Cup weighs around 1280 kgs.
Unfortunately the 944 cell is basically rather heavy but if you remove the cat, put a K&N you may already notice a difference if your engine is a good one.

Iggy,

Why don't you just do the Porker and flog the Golf - As you yourself mentioned, you don't have the budget to do both and the 944 will be more fun (and you can then stop meeting your Golf buddies in Sainsbury's car parks for midnight burnouts and loud stereo competitions on Friday nights )

Anyway, on a far more important note, my male Iggy needs to breed soon so are you up to lending your services and giving him something to practice with?

Dave
ps: You coming over to Wycombe at the weekend?

The 944 project sounds a good idea,i think performance car or early Evo mag did something like this to a 944,giving it away as a prize ....bright orange if any one else can remember.

Well from memory the quoted figs for early 944s are something like 1180kg for a standard car where as the later S2's & turbos are pushing 1400kg. So sub 1100kg seems easy to beat & sub 1000kg if i went as far as stripping the interior totally & the underseal etc. oh and cats diddnt coem along for almost another 10 yrs but a k&N re-mapped ECu and removing the balance belts should see a decent 15bhp ish gain.

I remember the orange Performance cars 944 it was a 944s I belive & I do know that Doms mate Henry at 911 virgins had it a year or so ago as a track car not suer if they still run it. Is it the polaris track rental car now Dom?

Well Ive been a bit busy with on my deodorant advert as all that punching & kicking wears me out so im not sure im up to breeding at the moment (I do relize that will make no sence if you havnt seen that advert)

Edited to add- although if you have now given ya missis the nickname iggy and are not in fact refering to your pet iguana i could perhaps summon some energy for procreation activities

Will try & make the wycombe meet, probabally on the 2 wheels if its not p*ssing down to avoid numpty sunday drivers.

I'm sure ninemeister said the supercharged 944 racer was about 1100kg. I still think a V8 in a 944 would be a thoroughly good idea...

You're right - they advertised it for sale not long ago and IIRC offered to knock a grand off the price if you drove it around logo'ed up with 911virgin stickers for a year - surprised PHer's weren't queuing up!

Like the idea though. As much as I like Golf's (got a Mk1 Campaign project) agree that RWD would be more fun for track days.

Its easy to get a 944 sub 1100kg (I've been as low as 1080kg c/w cage etc). Even with limited power you can still make them dance, just set the car up to stop (928gts brakes/Portafield bads) and corner (leda adj. suspension/650lb springs, coil over rears/600lb, 245/16" slicks all round). I ran this set-up at Cadwell, and could beat 964rs's

I have fitted LEDA Track Day dampers and springs to my 944 and they are fantastic.

P.S. I know where to get around 200 quid discount on these

Not sure the Polaris drive 944s are ex Evo/Henry. Got the impression Polaris drive did the work themselves. They handle even better than normal when stripped out
