After a fairly high speed run up to Sheffield on Saturday and the fear of now getting a nice surprise letter in the post I am thinking of investing in a radar detector. I know absolutely jack about them and wanted some PH advice.

I would get v frustrated with continual bleeping/flashing at anything that sent out frequencies so that is to be avoided. I dont mind false warnings for things such as M25 gantries etc but dont want it to extract the urine whilst driving around town.

I have heard that some are no good in the sense by the time it warns you of the laser detection (i assume this only refers to mobile units) then it is too late and you will be hearing from the bib shortly anyway. Is that right?

I read ted's review of the Cyclops and that seems a good option (and reasonably priced)

any advice appreciated.

There are so many different ways of being caught for speeding that there is no one solution - other than to be very careful and keep eyes peeled.

The most comprehensive alert systems are those based on GPS and have a database of known camera and other high risk 'blackspot' sites: Origin Blue, Morpheous, Road Angel, Snooper S6 Neo.

With the exception of the Origin Blue - the other units are available with radar detection, laser detection and in the case of the S6 - both radar and laser.

Radar detects do false alot - fact. However, they are a useful backup to GPS systems when a GATSO camera is not already logged into the database. However, if the non GASTO (ie non radar) cameras are not logged into the database - you still have to be careful. Digital TruVelos and SPECS SVVD don't give out a radar signature, so you could be on your own.

Laser detectors - the case is not so clear. Police laser is on the increase for mobile traps - however, it is widely accepted that by the time the laser detector goes off - you've already been done. Some say that scatter of the laser from cars in front being targetted may be picked up. That really relies on a laser sensor being dead centre on the dashboard, or preferably located adjacent to the vehicle's front registraion plate - the area that Police will aim for.

The newer solution is a laser blinder which interrupts the functioning of Police laser and prevents a reading being taken. The law is unclear on the use of such systems at the moment but it is conceivable that a user could be prosecuted for perverting the course of justice or interfering with the Police carrying out their duties. They are not cheap and require fitting too.

As I said, no one solution to this other than keep speed down - especially in town areas and motorways - or pay around £900 to get every conceivable piece of kit fitted on your car. But then you can be followed and clocked by VASCAR. Your choice.

Have you had the dreaded envelope yet Phil? If they come through there will be more than one or two unhappy punters on here. Here's hoping for the best.

there are a lot of threads on this - might be worth some time invested in searching - after i conducted a review I opted for a Road Angel with the laser detector option - so far I've found it to be very useable (pretty much as marketed) - the "average speed" forms of trap are on the increase, I live in north london, do a fair bit of B road blasting and travel north fairly frequently so have a few different requirements. The kit seems well tuned in and not that unsightly or distracting

others have picked up on the laser issue - I went for the laser kit but I don't have any real confidence it'll work more than 50% of the time - and then only due to deflection triggering early warning

I have a client out in Florida who has his car rigged up like a stealth bomber with diffusers and jammers - don't believe those that try to argue they are legal over here - they are not so whatever you opt for keep an eye out for the Vascar behind you and the mobile laser
