Specing for a new Porsche. VTS - What is the deal?

Like, it seems, a lot of contributors here I am debating the specs of a 997 gt3. One of those is the VTS pre wiring, which, although an option, is in fact not. No problem as it would be preferable to have a vehicle tracking system. But, the option for £500 odd is the pre wiring. To get the actual vehicle tracking system is a further £1,161.00 according to the tequipment catalogue.
I would like to get a tracking system but this seems expensive. When a lot of you guys comment on your specs for new cars you never mention this large extra cost. So what is the deal?
How much is the system?
Is it any good and worth having?
If no to the above, what are the alternatives?
