Hi gents i've been looking for a BMW 328 coupe sport for about 3 years, i've looked at about 10 so far but each has had various problems that has meant i have walked away.

I've just found one at a local dealership which is a minter. 102K miles and everything seems stunning on test drive it felt tight responsive and drove like it should around the twisties.

Everything was going great until i did the obligatory oil filler cap check and my heart just sank. It had a mustard/mayo on it, not too thick but it was there. In all my experience my head was screaming walk away but everything else is just spot on.

I know this is such a bad sign but as it has been on the forcourt for a while with VERY short start stops several times a day i'm hoping this is the cause but it can't be ignored.

My question is i think i may ask the dealer to drop the oil for fresh stuff and then let me run £20 of fuel through the tank and get in nice and hot etc. Will this be enough to tell if there is a major problem or should i listen to that screaming voice in my head and run a mile.

Thanks gents

It just a congestion. normal. if car has been left for weeks, and used in short runs. give it a long run. it will be ok.

Hackett,

Not being funy mate but why don't you pay £100 and get the RAC/AA to check it out.

They'll do a test to see if any water is getting into the oil and various other things too, it might be worth it in the long run.

Yeah thats not a bad idea i can get access to a pressure tester so plan A is to get AA/RAC check and plan B is to pressure test the cylinder head. Thanks for replies by the way

Why do you care if you're buying it from a dealer ? It will come with a years warranty surely so you get it fixed foc.

dont wast your money that mayo is normal in some,i just dont get it sombody see's mayo in the oil cap and thinks the head gaskets gone,in my 26 yrs in the trade ive never seen head problems due to a bit of mayo in oil cap,its just engine temp and type of use.

It's normal to get water in the oil due to condensation in the crank case, so this isn't conclusive evidence of a problem. However, if you get oil in the water that is a very strong sign of HGF. If you see mayo under the filler cap, check the state of the coolant. If it's nice and clear you know not to panic. I'd still check for possible HGF if the mayo didn't clear after the engine had been stinking hot for half an hour.
