I cant believe these guys 16% rise limited modernisation and they are still moaning

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2868431.stm

at least they have delayed strikes by a month, what a wonderful token of support that is for our boys in the gulf............

P.S. - please take the last paragraph as absolute and total sarcasm!!!!!

Yes, my sympathy for them ran out after the first few strikes. Most people would kill for a payrise even half of what they're being offered.

And yes, it's a dangerous job, but they chose it knowing the salary. If they want more money, they know where the door is. There are around 40 applicants for each firefighters job advertised, so there's hardly a shortage.

Seconded, but I never had any sympathy for them.

Hmmmm Maybe it's time the government got tough and gave the other 39 jobs....... might help get some loyalty from the rest if they are suddenly reduced to 39.50 a week dole money

Theres 40 applicants per job, doesn't mean any of them are suitable to do it.

16% of fuk all and all that.

This is an old subject thats been done to death, the government should stop messing about and just bloody well pay them a decent wage FFS!!!

One of their biggest gripes is that they won't be able to run their extra businesses (Window Cleaning generally) if the modernisation goes through.

Recently chatting to one bloke and his Cleaning round (on top of his Firewage) is bringing in about 25K per annum profit (runs lots of em - only employs firemen!)

well yes, there is an issue over whether 20k p/a is enough for doing a stalwart job, but on the other hand as has already been mentioned, they knew the rate for the job when they applied. If we allow the wages of the majority of jobs to be decided broadly by market forces then 40+ applicants per vacancy almost makes it look like they are overpaid (not my opinion BTW)

FFS this 40+ applicants per job is complete bollox.

You get this because there's no academic entry requirements, this means a lot of aplicants are people that decide on a whim that being a Fire fighter sounds like fun so they send their name off.

If you advertised in the paper for:

FIGHTER PILOTS
No experience necessary, alll training given.

You'd get more than 40 applicants per position but none of em could effing do the job, so stop going on about it!!!!

Well 2 A levels is exactly going to help you fly a plane, so technically it is saying 'No experiance necessary'

Err no.... 2 A levels takes a reasonable amount effort, as oposse to no A-levels which take absolutely none.

I'm prepared to give on the 40+ number, I do read the sun after all (look, I know, I know, I really ought to cancel it)but even weeding out the people who apply on spec, they still must be oversubscribed

Shame shame shame. My sympathy's going for them too now. I agreed they should be paid more, they had public support and now they are losing it it would seem.

If they carry on striking now when the general public need reassurance in times of war then they are no better than the terrorists, as our family friends and houses are equally at risk, but from our own unavailable people.

Come on boys (and girls), sort it out - it's not like we aren't still proud of you. You have a job to do for now and there is plenty of time to increase the deal you have already been offered.

But your point was 'No experiance' ie never been a pilot before
So what we're basically saying is you can be relatively thick (but brave) to be a fireman

OK OK, I said 'no expereince' but I should have said 'no experience/qualifications', I'm trying to work and toss it off at the same time, give me a break.

Can you not see my point though????

Some of the muppets that phone up here for a job just because we put 'training will be given' have to heard to be believed

Fireman gets paid £21K for part time work and is prepared to but peoples lives at risk to get more.

Soldier gets paid £13K for full time work and yet serves with unflinching loyalty.

If it was up to me I'd swap the two figures round.
