A few questons..

What does it actually mean?

Will it effect my insurance/make the quote more ridiculous?

Is it something I should be concerned about?

Is there any other downside other than the fact that when I sell it the car will be worthless??

At some point in the car's history it's either been crashed, nicked, or not paid for by someone, if your happy the current owner owns it and all 4 wheels point in the same direction, and it's cheap, go for it, but when/if you try and sell it a load of straight lace buyers will run a mile (I think)

There are quite a few threads about this, do a search on HPI

Rule of thumb pay between 2/3 and 3/4 of the non HPI car

the car in question is £3800 instead of £5000 - may be able to get it even lower. So if its in decent condition and the insurance doesnt matter it'll be quite a decent buy??

I wont be in any position to sell the car for a good four or five years anyway, so it's gonna be worth 2/3rds of nothing anyway

If it has not been fully paid for/ written off etc etc - will a Hpi check reveal all of this stuff in more detail?

If the current owner is being nice enough to already tell you it's on the 'register' chances are it's relativly straight and he may even already have a HPI report
But even so for £30ish I'd still get my own done before parting with £4k as it's a lot of money to lose if the repo man comes for it after you've had it a fortnight

The car was originally advertised a week or so ago. It then disappeared and reappeared saying it was "on list".

Think I might give it a miss, its a nice colour and low miles with a decent spec. But because its newer the insurance is more (WHY>??) so im not so sure.

Must admit though, if its straight then its a bargain...

I bought a Jaguar on the HPI register.

Insurance is exactly the same premium wise, however, if its involved in an write off accident or is stolen and not recovered, then you will only recieve the true value of the car - not the market value.

So make sure you only pay what its worth and when you come to sell it, if the buyer don't ask - he don't get to know - full market value (not that i'd recommend ripping people off but honestly - there's a sucker born every minute.)
