Interior light

New Griff owner here again.

Should the interior light on the roof light when either of the dors are opening. I can hear a click when i open either door, which i think is from the alarm (?) but the switch in either position on the light doesn't cause the light to come on with an open door.

Hi there. Yep, according to my car the light should come on when both doors are open. Is the one working in the passenger footwell?

FFman did you get a hand book with your Griff ?
The light should be on position 3, near to the back window, then will light if door are opened sounds like your bulb has blown.

yes i got a book - have used it some to work out the dash board but didn't get to the light.

the bulb is ok in the roof light, comes on when rear-most or forward most even with doors shut, so i guess a dorr switch is stuck - will investigate in the day light.

Are you sure the click you can hear is from the alarm?

It seems odd to me that the bulb is OK but doesn't come on with either door.
Test the see if the relay is where that click is coming from by holding it and pressing the door open/closed switch - the relay should be the topmost right corner on your fuseboard.

I don't think theres another compatible relay you could swap it with so what you do if you find thats where the click is coming from - other than replace it with a new one - I will leave to someone smarter than me to explain.

i assumed the relay was the alarm but if there is one otherwise then that is what i can hear. it does come from the passenger footwell.

the light is on with the switch forwards or backwards, doors open or shut, so i have a little investigating to do it would seem.

If the light go on in both positions (doors open or closed) my first check would be the door switches.

My interior lights don't always come on. This is due to the button at the base of my door being stuck on occassion. If I open the door and the light doesn't come on, I just need to press this door button a couple of times and then it comes on.

You could have the same sticking switch/button ?

Has any one got the part number or a source for these switch's as I can't remember where I bought my last set for my old S series and the new Griffs have gone now also.

I am pretty sure that they are a vauxhall part, probably off any old one, as it looks exactly the same as the one on my brothers VX220t

Door switches on metal bodied cars usually have just one wire and the switch connects/breaks earth for the interior light.
Does the one on TVRs have 2 wires (in and out) and can't you therefore just test the circuit by bypassing the switch and connecting the wires together?

so after a bit of investigation - i found and replaced the bulb in the passenger footwell light - now it does the same as the roof mounted one i.e. with the switch in either positions its always on.

I removed both the door switches and checked the wiring - with both i can hear the relay operate when the switch is moved.

Does anyone know which relay this is and how i can lay my hands on it ?

No, they're VW / Audi (at least on my car). There's a part number on the switch - or just take it along to your local VAG dealer.

There's a small relay board behind the dash which has either two or four relay-looking things on it (can't remember exactly). One of these is the hazard relay, and another switches with the courtesy light switches. I think it's used to tell the alarm whether or not the doors are open, and possibly also to allow the central locking button on the dash to operate correctly. I know you (the original poster) said the clicking is coming from the footwell - but check again. Could it be from behind the dash (just to the right of the glovebox against the bulkhead)?

Either way, my courtesy light delay unit was removed when I bought the car, and I've wired the courtesy lights so that they are switched directly by the switches. This gives trouble-free operation... The only downside is that the central locking button on the dash is no inoperative - which I can live with!

Stick your head into the footwell and you'll see the fuseboard and a bank of relays above them.
The courtesy light delay unit (M00383) is the one in the top right corner on every diagram shown in the bible.

i saw the small relay board behind the dash, and stuck a finger on each relay to see if i could feel clicking with the door switches but i couldn't.

is this the same relay board as barreti mentions or is the main one somewhere else ? i assume we're talking about passenger footwell ?

is the light delay the cause of the problem. is the delay to leave the lights on for a few secs once you get in the car ?

I had this problem -

I had exactly the problem you are describing and did virtually what you have done so far: Eventually I found that the drivers side door button switch was not being closed sufficiently to swith of the circuit: Dont know how or why but over time the fault had developed. I couldn't adjust the button switch to compensate so I found a small transparent rubber sticker (the kind that you put on the bottom of speakers to stop them vibrating on wooden floors) circular about 1cm diameter & 5mm thick:Put this on the back of the door and hey presto fixed:

To test hold both door switches completely closed (may need a freind for one of the doors) for about 30 seconds There is a delay on the lights relay: (about 15 -20 seconds on mine)...

tried what mikedavis1 suggested, held both switches in and lights stay on regardless.

where is the timing mechanism - is it in the relay and where do i find this particular one ?
