I put 5/30 in my Mk2 1.8i because it was recommended to me by one of those oil book things.

Have I gone and put the wrong oil in my car?

I think most, including me, use 0W40, 5W40 or 10W40. Personally, I tend to use Halfords 5W40 fully synth and would be concerned about 5W30 being too thin, and would consider it an absolute no-no if you intend to do track days and the like.

Edited to add: Just done a quick search on the MX-5 OC Forum, and it doesn't sound like the ideal choice:

I use 0w40w Mobil 1 or 5w40w Silkolene Pro S - all fully syntehtic.

Mazda recommend is a Semi Synth 10w40w - I think 5w30w will be adequate for your needs over winter unless you do a lot of driving.

Ahem, it's my everyday car. I'd better get some more appropriate stuff.

5W-30 (unless you get the new VW stuff) tends to be the fuel economy oil which thins down more than a regular oil. i wouldn't use it unless it was actually specified (A1/B1 is the spec for an FE oil).

If Skinny says something you listen...

....he's as much an oil guru as oilman is.

I'll take my place in the corner.
