Domain name and emails...
Discussion
I'm tired of having work email addresses, personal email, junk email, email for me and the misses etc etc. All are web based as I have moved about a bit over the past few years and changed ISP.
So I register a domain name and set it up to forward to my current ISP email in Outlook or something?
But then when I send an email it will come from the ISP email address? Can this be avoided so people only know me as sending emails from one address?
Please enlighted me!

With standard forwarind you do not get your own SMTP server, so you have to email out using your ISP smtp server, invariably this means an @isp.com email address
If you want an @yourdomain.com email shown, just buy a cheap hosting package.
Check the banner in the top right, packages from £33 a yr and used by hundreds of PH'rs.

Depends!
With the standard Register1 packages (ie buying a domain name only), as Jamie has mentioned, you can receive emails at your domain, but you cannot send from that domain (unless you have hosting on that domain)
However, if you use Googlemail (feel free to email me through my profile for an invite if you need one) you can set it up to appear to send from whatever email address you want.
Ideal for me - I have a domain hosted with Register1 (so I can send & receive emails with no faffing via Outlook), if I need to send an email from any of my other domains, I do that from Googlemail.
Hope that's clear. (ish)

Ooer, not spotted that you could do that before, could be rather handy when away on holiday

Ahem. No it doesn't.
I can send you an email to prove it, if you want.
Depends weather your ISP is a pain in the arse not.... (just spent the best part of an hour and a half dealing with such a situation)
ETA Ooops sorry Jamie just realised, didnt mean to imply anything about anyone in this thread *insults removed*
Yes there are reasons for refusing to relay for domains that aren't hosted by that ISP, its just very annoying when it causes you a load of greif! Edited by aldi on Tuesday 21st November 11:47

Indeed, it used to be fine to do so from almost all, but then the blight of spam meant that a lot of SMTP servers are tied down in some way.

Anonymous relays are obviousley out but I think as long as authenticated SMTP is used you should be able to send from whatever domain you want, that way the ISP can still easily keep track of the volumes of messages you're sending and block you if neccecary. Or rate-limit you, say 1000 outbounds a day max. OK for normal email use, no use for spammers. Just saying a flat no is the lazy way out IMO. Loads of people have domains here and there, accounts scatterd to the winds and having restrictions like that just makes life complicated where it doesnt need to be!

Ahem, as I said invariably
ntl and the like (used to) append @ntl.com on the end of their mails, to stop people / businesses relaying thru them.
I'm sure there are some ISP's who do not, hence my Invariably, as opposed to definitely
