Sorry if this has been posted before but what's the situation on being talivanned (see that I made up a new verb) or Specced (and another) from the front when I'm on the motorbike (no front plate). Surely I can't just blast along with imunity!!!!

SPECS and Truvelos, hell yes you can.

GATSO's mean you either ride on the wrong side of the road, or pop a wheelie past the evil thing.

However, this is a Bad Thing to do, for some reason. Also, be aware that police have been known to frequent bike hangout to get video ID on bikes, and it takes 12 points of similarity to prove a vehicle ID, so be wary around the Talivans. Nothing wrong with dropping a cog or so, and going past at 30 mph, clutch dipped, at 10000rpm, of course.

Enjoy it while it lasts, I can't see the Scammers allowing this for much longer.

Presumably the spiteful scum 'could' report you for excessive noise or anti-social behaviour or something?

I recall reading that somewhere in the USA had experimented with civillian type Scam-vans (Hawaii I think?) but it was short lived due to the treatment the scammers received from the motoring public (excrement thrown at them etc)

We could use a similar campaign to show the Scammers what people really think of them......

I could never recommend such a course of action, especially not using caltrops in Scamera only parking spaces.

Given that there have already been - successful - prosecutions brought against drivers for making rude gestures at van operators I'd imagine that the full weight of law enforcement would be brought to bear on anyone who really interfered with them in any way.

Prosecutions on what grounds?

I'd have to have a dig around - there's probably a thread or two on the subject on here somewhere, but I believe one was prosecuted for the offensive behaviour and another for due care as he had both hands off the wheel making gestures.

Could be wrong on the detail, though.

If you're doing that out in the wide open spaces, cool.
When in a residential area, however, please refrain from the gratuitous 10 grand rips.
They are puerile and offensive.

Pretty much reserved for the A1 and other unpopulated A-roads, but I feel annoying Scamerati is never gratuitous. Interestingly, the same tactic has been recommended elsewhere for use against NIMBY speedhumpage, without adverse commentary. I'm sure its not an anti-bike thing, so volume, or small capacity tone?

All I know is that in the centre of town, from a hundred or more metres away, I regularly hear three and only three sources of completely selfish and unnecessary, irritating engine noise:
- 2% twits in Lambos
- 18% shit-for-brains in 430s and 360s
- 80% jerks on bikes

Yes, cacophonies from buses and scooters are just as repellent, but they don't carry nearly as far.

I'm sorry, but when you're in town operating one of the above, there is never a need to give it large.

I am as contemptuous of the clowns in the vans as the next man is, but it's not on to make other innocent people's lives miserable simply in order to get a rise out of the clown.

Fair enough, over egging anything in an urban setting is a PITA. Do bear in mind, however, that while I shan't condone deliberate over-revving, there is a valid argument for vocal pipes on bikes, given the idiocy of your average pedestrian, who will (and I use examples from today alone) step out from the front of a bus, saunter into traffic wearing an iPod, step across stationary traffic while forgetting to check between lanes, and cross nonchalantly 3 feet from a pelican crossing. I wouldnt mind if this was outside a secondary school, but most of this was on and around Cannon Street in the city. So at least some of the 80% is justified noise.

I can't speak to how much engine noise is necessary to alert brain-dead pedestrians who cannot be bothered to raise their eyes in order to protect their own lives.

I would observe that - in general - we PHers condemn speed limits for the reason that they are intended to contain the mistakes of the lowest common denominator drivers yet they penalise everyone, so it may be ironic to defend very loud bike exhausts on the basis that they might contain the mistakes of the lowest common denominator pedestrians.

Also, a bike exhaust surely is much more audible after it has passed one than when it is headed in one's direction, no?

My general sense is that the bikers who rev their engines out to 10 grand-plus are doing it mainly to enjoy the rush of acceleration in a low gear, rather than to employ their engine note in lieu of the horn as a pedestrian warning device.

Cheers.

Good point, but if I take the headers out I get LOTS of frowns...

Absolutely 100% agree with you there.

Your health, sir.

Find out where he drinks, get him barred.

Let his neighbours know what he does...

Get as many as posible to shun the scum.

There is no good reason for scamaratti to be accepted in polite society of for their buisness to be welcome amongst decent folks.

Truvelos can be set up to be rear facing, permanently and temporarily.

I wonder how a front facing talivan mounted camera could be swung around to get a bike plate?

IIRC, the drivers were actually prosecuted for not being in full control of their vehicle (both hands off wheel for v-signs).

AFAIK the scammers can film you exceeding the limit and then make a noteof your plate to prosecute. IIRC therre's been a thread on here about someone having a visit from the BiB after a fairly rare bike had been razzing the scameras. It didn't take them long to find a red BMW in Norfolk...

scratchchinI wonder how far the prosecution would go before they realised it was a left hand drive car....*

*Not that I'm advocating making a mockery of the criminal "justice" system

You could give it the beans through SPECS and Truvelos but I'd ask you not to - the more people take the p***, the more likely it is that the powers that be will decide that bikes should be wearing their registrations on the front, somehow. Enjoy the advantage no front plate affords, but don't push your luck.

re Loud pipes - my 7R wears a race can, and my next bike wears two (it's a twin), though the latter has baffles. I could argue the whole 'loud cans save lives' thing but as mentioned, they're not really any good until you've passed the hazard anyway - I have a loud can because a)the bike came with it, and the fuelling is set up for it and b)I like the noise it makes BUT I go out of my way to be considerate toward others - if I leave/arrive home at unsociable hours then I pull the clutch in and coast through villages and/or keep the revs low in town - IME most Police have no problem with loud pipes provided you're not bouncing your bike off the limiter outside Ms Miggins' house at 3am.

Just my 2p.
