A colleague is looking to get a Porsche and has asked for some help from me as I don’t shut up about cars.

His requirements are as follows: Not a Boxster or 4x4 and he has 35k. It will be his only motor and it will (unfortunately) not experience any track action.

Now I am no Porsche expert but I suggested a good condition 996.

Any advice or suggestions?

Forget the Porsche and get an M3.

Nope, its got to be a Porsche. I think past experiences with BMW have put him off.

If he wants "a porsche" he wants a 911.

And if he's not really an enthusiast (hence certainly not a purist), I'd say a 996 too. And with that in mind, I'd suspect a c4 or c4s to be a good bet for him.

If he has had bad experiences with BMW he's in for some serious grief with Porsche..all the problems ive had with BMW are minor(and cheap) compared to Porsche.

Ditto that. I got a low mileage excellent spec C2 facelift in March for £36k

Since that time I have put 11,000 miles on it and it still makes me smile everytime I drive it

Well I am only trying to back up my initial thoughts about which Porsche is best for him.

I know that it is not cheap to run a Porsche but this is not one of his concerns (!).

For my information. How much would he be looking at for regular maintainance on a 996? 15,000 miles a year, starting with about 45k on the clock?

Service schedules are 12,000 miles or one year whatever comes first. No horrors sitting in the schedules at 40k plus such as cam belt changes etc as everything is chain driven.

2001 onwards 3.6 facelift 996 would be the most normal spend of £35k, Or he could save some money and buy an earlier car. Don`t get too flustered on exact model worry about buying a decent example.

Monaro VXR 500?

Bit of a leftfield option, but it's gotta be worth suggesting.

Other (some outlandish) thoughts:-
NSX (would he appreciate it?)
new-style S4
S-Type R
post-05 TVR

Top advice. Is this standard proceedure with a 911?

Obviously with something like a Lotus Elise there are many different options and opinions will vary often.

Thanks

S4 is something I mentioned as I recon that is one hell of a vehicle, I also pitched spending 10k more and getting a 2006 RS4 but this would take some work.

All Porsches are exactly the same as henry said..if you want a 996tt and end up with a 964 cab you wont be able to tell the difference as long as its in good conditionlaugh

Preferably with lots of miles and a dodgy coloured interior

How about a mint Turbo2 £25-£30k with the change run it for a few years. On the plus side you see very few on the road.Running costs on the high side but just think of the fun.(i know i am going to get some stick for the suggestion but what the hell.)
