You approach a roundabout to go ahead (2nd exit) and there are 3 lanes on approach but no markings on road surface and no other traffic. Which lane should you take? (Highway Code is as clear as mud). No answers from Von please as Im interested in what sort of replies we'll get.

with no other traffic and a clear roundabout, the position that gives the best line through the roundabout. Prob half of L1 and half L2.

The Highway Code is pretty clear - it says take an appropriate lane, I dont see what is unlear about that.

Is this some kind of test?

You don't say how many exits there are, what sort of roads are coming off it, Dual Carriageways, Single, ect, if straight ahead is before or after 12 o'clock, Got any aerial pics and I'll tell you the right answer, I'm a god at Roundabouts, it's the other idiots that you have to make allowances for!

You also don't mention If they are on the phone/texting!

For starters, if "you" are a IAM you won't be indicating(cos there isn't anybody to indicate to)secondly which ever lane "you" take will be the right one.

Would appropriate be left, middle or right? That is what is unclear?

Allaway replies
Straight ahead is 12 o clock. There are 3 exits, left, ahead and right. And what difference would it make if there was a central reservation or not?

What is appropriate would be dependant on the exact circumstances, and layout of the roundabout.

For example, the first exit may be a no through road or other minor entrance.

As a rule of thumb, if there are three lanes, and three exits, it is reasonably obvious which lane is for which exit.

However, still dont know the point of the question. Is it a genuine query (?), as the answer is different on what you *can* do and *should* do, whether it is regard to an insurance claim, or whether you are trying to reduce your chances of a potential accident, or is this just a setup to inform us of your omnipotent driving knowledge?

If you have an accident when there is no one else about how can it be anyone elses fault?.

On a wide road approach with no lane markings to said roundabout then you take the 'safeline position' which I understand the Vee Haych School of Motoring advocates and which is the safest position for a vehicle to occupy on a road from the nearside at any given moment of its journey.

Think about it.

No other traffic around - all three lanes, probably, possibly a few more on approach.

If there is no othre traffic, and the 2nd is stright on then take the 'racing' line.

Aproach in lane 1 scrub off neccessary excess speed, then aim at the apex of the bend (roundabout curb) them aim under acceleration to 'clip' - not literally - the curb of lane 1 again.

Surely you want to be in lane 3 with about 200 yards to go, then start to aim for the apex curb where lane 1 ends with about 100 yards (or less) to go, then hit the brakes while you are in a straight line, get off the brakes and aim for the apex of the roundabout(9 o`clock position), then get back on the gas and let it drift out to the apex of the start of lane 1.

All this would be happening(in my case) whilst making sure your flask doesn't fly off the passenger seat.

Good G-meters, flasks. Bottles of Coca-Cola work too, but the plastic ones don't shatter with the same satisfying crunch, usually at the point of maximum concentration on missing that third kerb on the exit. So then you need a new flask AND a new tyre.
