hello everybody.im just wondering if anybody has ever timed up a ford explorer 4 litre v6.my dads just had the timing chains changed and now it runs like a bag of nails.the mechanic said the chains must have jumped before he marked where everything was before he took it apart.however anybody who has seen a chain on a sprocker knows its near imposable for it to jump when under the kind of tention a timing chain is.the mechanic is talking about jigs needed to get the timing spot on but the only way i have ever known to time an engine is to get the no1 piston to top dead centre and the correct valves open/closed etc.is their somthing i dont know about this engine or is the mechanic not worth his weight in bolts.please help as without sound advise we dont really have a leg to stand on.

kind regards tom.

If the chains had jumped before disassembly then the car would have been running like a dog then surely?Aren't there timing marks on the crank and cam shafts and their respective housings?

There are no timing marks on this engine, there are special tools to lock the pulleys. There is also a chain to the rear of the engine, three is total, so plenty of chances to get it wrong.
