I am a PS2 owner and would have bought a PS3 before Sony fluffed things up.
I am also a fan of StarWars and the Xbox has at least 3 titles not availabe on other platforms.
Should I buy an X360 now so I can play old Xbox games and next gen games?
Or buy and old gen xbox and wait for the PS3 launch next year?

If you like shooters like halo and Gears of war then buy a 360, but of you are into racing/rallying games then hang on for a ps3.
Not sure about that advice.
360 has PGR3 and will soon have Forza 2 and late next year will have Colin McRae: DIRT (Forza blitzed GT4 IMO).
What does PS3 have that 360 won't ??? A glammed up version of GT4 for release and an all new GT HD that won't be out until 2008 !!

Totally agree with that J. i've got a few friends who have been GT series fans all the way through and have been wetting themselves about GT5 on the ps3, however now they are all talking of coming over to the "dark side"

Was going to say much the same as you.
Are there no race/rally games available or coming to the 360 then?
Apart from Forza, ridge racer, GTR and maybe GTL later, no doubt rallisport, Project Gotham, the need for speed titles of course, moto GP, Test drive, tuner challenge and no doubt many more to come.
Yeah, apart from all those..
The PS3 will also have its fair share of halo/gears of war type games so i wouldn't decide based on that advice either.

Had a 360 for a couple of weeks, ebay'd it last week. Don't like the controller, feels v. cumbersome after the ps2's. All the game's look pretty, but got bored v. quickly. For example, pro evo6 has more features and stadiums on ps2 than 360.
It's well documented that PES has more features on the PS2 aye, although nobody seems to care
much about the lack of stadiums on the 360 simply because you never really see them.Surely that's not why you got "bored" though, due to one game i mean, or do you mean you are just bored of gaming in general?
Btw even some long term PES fans have admitted the latest Fifa game on the 360 is a cracker so lacking features on PES shouldn't put anyone off really.
Controller wise i really like the 360 pad, so much so i now use it on my PC in fact.
Maybe i'm just not so fussy though as i always seem to be comfortable with any controller within 5 minutes of use. From my atari vcs days through to the SNES, N64, gamecube, dreamcast, PS1, PS2, 3DO etc etc etc i have just picked them up and played
I honestly find it strange that not liking a pad would contribute to someone selling a console.

When you say you would have got a PS3 before Sony fluffed up, are you talking about
forcing Lik Sang to close?
Also what are the XBox games mate that you want to play only i'm not sure every old xbox
game is compatible with the 360.
PS2 pads are horrid, the 360 ones use triggers for brakes and throttle, so much better than a squeezed in stick sony use! I suppise ps2 pads are more for tiny hands, And PS2 has always been the worse console for driving games, The 360 is far superior, ever le mans 24hr on the dreamcast was at least twice as impressive as anything Sony bodged together!!!
Get a 360, I was given a PS2 (in return for some electrical work!) sold the PS2 and games, eye toy ect and bought Progect Gotham Racing for the 360, feck is that good, And Test drive unlimited is twice as good again (PGR3 was a rush conversion of PGR2 just to get a hd driving game out for the launch, PGR4 look amazing, even better than release PS3 racers!)

The PS2 pads are great for me, better than the 360 ones for certain games (pro evo for starters) To the original poster you will have just as much fun on either system, I fully intend on owning both (along with the Wii) Although you can be having fun on a 360 right now as opposed to waiting until March.
PGR3 isn't really a rushed copy of PGR2 either, it's a totally different game with a whole new engine and entirely different cities and objectives.
As for PGR4 looking better than release PS3 racers, I'm not sure where you're coming from there as there hasn't been any in-game footage released, just a promotional teaser video that didn't focus on any sort of gameplay at all... How you can say that it looks better than any of the PS3 racers when that's all you have to judge it from is a little odd.

The PS2 pad does have analog buttons though, i actually prefer to use the shoulder buttons for gears and the X/Y type buttons for gas and brakes tbh.I don't think the 360 uses analog for the buttons?
Also, the PS2 still has one of the best rally games i have ever played in its collection and the most interesting bike racer imho.Actually the last few F1 games have been pretty damn good too!
Plus, love them or hate them, the GT series is still the stuff of legend.
Then who can forget the first time they booted up ridge racer back in the PS1 days or loaded up
destruction derby (not number 2 - that was poo). The Sony consoles changed the face of gaming!
The buttons maybe analogue but they only have about 3 mm of travel, with the 360 ones they work the same as pedals!
Sega changed the face of consoles, first with the mega drive and again with the dreamcast (vastly superior to the PS2, just marketed totally wrong!), And I'm still sure that they helped MS with the X-box's!
The best track racing game is Toca, and that's a multi format, And I didn't know Sega Rally was on the PS2!
Have to admit that Destruction Derby was a laugh, But for total mindless destruction Burnout Revenge kicks ass!

The mega drive and SNES were really just a few steps up from the
nes and master system tbh although they were a huge leap over
pong and the vcs of course
They did a good job of bringing arcade style games to many homes though, but the PS1, Saturn and even in some way the 3D0 really gave us a taste of what was possible.
From the moment wipeout used music tracks that people were listening to in clubs etc people stood up and took notice of the playstation. And at a time when ridge racer was the ultimate arcade game in terms of graphical prowess and speed, it was a miracle that the little grey PS1 box could produce such a superb version of it in your lounge! It was just so unexpected as apposed to the progression we had been used to.
Even the N64 has its place in history for leaving jaws on the floor too. When people were still spending hundreds on small ram upgrades for matrox cards in PC's (before the 3dfx accelerated machine got rolling) the N64 was yet another milestone.
The dreamcast was indeed a special machine though which certainly was leaps and bounds ahead of the PS1 and saturn, but to say it was "vastly superior" to a PS2 is pushing it a bit : p
I'm sure the ease of piracy didn't help its staying power either.
I will be the first to admit i was gutted to see how life treated segas next gen baby, it deserved to be around for a lot longer than it was.
Toca was cool, i will always remember playing the PC version with a wheel and being blown away despite the fact it now looks so bland and makes you wonder why you thought it was stunning all them years ago! But then many games make us feel like that i'm sure.
GPL of course was the real star of the show though imho.
Segal rally was a cracking game but can never compare to the WRC series on PS2 though. But that's hardly suprising really seeing as how it appeared years later on superior hardware.
Burnout and similar kinds of games have never appealed to me really i must admit.I always feel like i could glue down the accelerator button, go have dinner, come back and still be doing ok
Btw i do like the 360 pad, i use it on my PC now too, but i still feel more in control using a button for gas and braking and shoulder buttons for gears.
If i want something more like pedals, i just use pedals!

remember the dreamcast was the rival to the ps2(it only came out a year before!), at least untill sega ran out of money!! and the graphics were actually better on the dreamcast for the most part. up untill later games like gta sanandreas and gt4 anyway!
microsoft had a lot to do with the dreamcast. which shows with the first xbox. same button layout ect a lot of the dreamcast games went onto the xbox.
as for the ps3 and 360. the quality of the games on xbox always seems a lot better than sony to me. ok the ps2 had granturrismo and gta but that was about it. xbox had halo which in my opinion is still the best fps out there, ive played killzone on the playstaion which was a bit crap really, call of duty was just boring. i loved morrowind/oblivion as well, (although oblivion is coming out for the ps3 now.) and now theyve got gta4 as well
i havent played any driving games for the xbox, last driving game i played was gt4 which was good, i loved the ring
but it just gets boring to quick. its the same as all the other granturismos just with better graphics. and you always end up having to do one race about 50 times for enough money to buy a car to enter in the next series of races!!! i keep meaning to cheack out pgr. i should proabley go download the demo!!!!

I wouldn't say better, more comparable, but i know where you are coming from.
They never released many games that took advantage of the VGA output either
because that made some of the games even nicer on a monitor.
I still have a boxed Dreamcast keyboard, mouse and fishing rod in the loft.
I also have one of them Treamcasts which got swiftly banned from stores
I not an ardent gamer, I bought a X360 because I was bored of waiting for the ps3 and wanted something to keep the family and friends entertained over christmas. I think I would say I am disappointed. The games are OK, PGR is good, but my 3 other games. tom clancy something, battlfield and Call of duty 3, are okish, but not as amazing as I was hoping!
My plan is to use it for 12 months then ebay it, and get a ps3, my other half who loves platform games, thinks its very poor. Given the fact that MS had 12 months to capatalise on the PS3 not launching in time, the number of games choices is pretty poor.

I would also like to play Halflife 2.
My game types are driving and first or third person shooters.
