Currently looking at purchasing a boxster 987 S, havnt had a test drive in one yet, hopefully going to look at a couple over the W/E but from the reveiws i have read it sounds like the best option. I've never had a soft top nor had a drive in one, What are the noise levels like (with the roof up) in the cabin. ??

Surprisingly quiet but I have yet to do a long journey in mine as I've only had it a couple of weeks.

I've got the regular 987 and to be honest I don't ever think "I'm in a convertible" and I do drive a few cars through work.

Since the facelift 986 the roofs have been excellent and you can easily forget you're in a convertible.

did you only consider the porsche or was it the best of the bunch(Z4 etc)?? i was considering TVR T350 but there present situation put me off plus the cost of running one eek , started looking at the boxster and it sounds like a really good car.

Ive had my 987S for nearly two months now - its fantastic you will grin like an idiot on every journey!

I have done probably 2000 miles of completely mixed driving. To be honest I do forget its a soft top, the only reminders being when you get up close to an artic in traffic etc. Overall I think its pretty quiet - although its my first ragtop too.

on the other question - I was all set to get into a Z4. Having spent time in both, in my opinion the boxster is in a different class both in quality and in performance.

Running costs are pretty good - Ive used about 3/4 of a tank this week doing boring driving and motorway stuff, average mpg 30.7. Not bad at all.

In my case there was very little that I actually liked the look of enough to part with that sort of money, and that I felt confident would be reliable/cheap (relative term) enough to run as a daily driver and that would hold its value as well as any new car does.

Bought one for the missus about 6 weeks ago just the 2.7 though. Its fantastic to drive and the noise levels are excellent. We've had a few ragtops and this IMO is by far the best in that price range. Problem is I want my own now.

Can only speak for the 2.7L (the 245bhp unit) and yes the engine noise is always there, presumably because it's right behind you, but I don't find it intrusive, although when I first got the car I was freaked out by the engine noise as it was so different than anything I'd had before.

done 75000 miles in my 986. wind noise was only ever a problem at three figure speeds and even then it was from the seal around the drivers door mirror rather than the roof.

It is a very well sound insulated roof system.

I drove a 500 mile 3.4S and I was quite dissapointed, when compared to our 2.7 at 4K miles and running Super Unleaded.

I've had two 3.2 S Boxsters --- pre and post-facelift.

The Post facelift was noticeably sportier, but I had never considered the wind noise in either of them.

With the roof up --- just a little dark and enclosed.

With the roof down --- magic.

My current steed is a GT3, but on the value stakes I reckon that the new 3.4 Boxster S should be up there with the best.

But allow 5,000 miles for running in !

Why do you say that, when the book suggests 3000km's/1895 miles?

Ive got a 3.2s and compared with the 911 carerra i had before it is very quiet.Gets louder over a 100mph though. Its comprable with most hatchbacks noise wise.Very very good car though.

because I have discovered at what point well run-in engines start to fly.

And I don't believe what books say.

There is no standard running in procedure and no standard engine loading over this time.

I see running in as an opportunity to spend time understanding the feel of the car -- and I have never taken the "thrashing it is the fastest route to maximum power" approach.

Well built performance engines take time to loosen up, and I reckon at 5,000 miles they start to deliver.

I would like to believe that at the age of 51 I am just starting to deliver, --- but it's a dream !

Definately, its one of the factors that sold the boxster to me over the Z4. It sounds great even at low revs/part throttle, wind it up and it just gets better..
