156 SW 2.4 JTD as a towcar

I'm getting fed up with my current tow car for the racer, a merc e class 300 DT, its naff. I've had it 3 months and I find it slow, drives like a barge and drinks fuel. So going against everything I have ever said to my mate who loves italian motors. God, i'm going to get such a pasting if he ever reads this, I'm thinking of getting a 2.4 JTD sport wagon 156.

What do they tow like? what goes wrong with them? and whats the best model to have?. Also can you actually get stuff in the back of them? I need to be able to get tools, spares and fuel etc well all the things you take on a race day really?

I guess they drive pretty nice so it may help to offset the fact that i have to smoke a diesel estate in the week if it puts a big enough grin on my face.
