Is it very hard to replace the gear lever bush on a 94 rover gearboxed chimaera? If its straight forward, how is it done?

Just wondering because I still have my centre console off exhaust off etc and whilst I am doing all this work and the car is off the road I may as well sort this out if its an easy job.

Many thanks
alex

Just had a quick look at the bible and there doesn't seem to e anything in there. I doubt if it's that difficult. Maybe a trip to a dealer may help - or if Steve is out there maybe he can add some advice?

Alex,

Its not too difficult. With the centre console off take the gearlever out. I did this by prising the bias spring out of the way of the two lugs on the side of the gearstick. You'll see what I mean when you get in there. The Rover manual says not to do this and to remove the two bridge plates holding the bias spring in. I couldn't get to them but I've not had any problems with the spring since.

Anyway, with the lever out you can see a circular yoke which the bottom of the lever sits in. In the metal yoke should be a white plastic sleeve and a gray nylon ball (bush) with a hole through it where the gearlever goes. The ball is a push fit into the sleeve but is held in with a circlip. My circlip was accessible through the gearlever hole from inside the car but I can't see why it wouldn't be fitted the otherway round ie circlip on underside of sleeve.

Once this is removed the sleeve can be pushed through and retrieved from under the car.

Reffitting is the reverse of removal as they say.

Please e-mail me if this is not clear. I have recently done this after the ball disintegrated on the M4 and stuck the car in 3rd gear!!!!

Cheers

Ed

What are the symptoms of a worn bush ? Gear shift on my Chim has become very sloppy front/rear but OK left/right. Could it be a bush ?

I have just done this repair to my car, however its not right, I had a metal ball with hole, a grey plastic bush looks like a top hat with circlip groove at top of hat, is this top hat supposed to be fitted from outside car ie with circlip ending up on the top and able to be put on from the inside the car or from inside with top of hat facing down i.e circlip put on from underneath the car. Appreciate any clarification from anyone who has done this job

Right, tried to see if my bush was worn (no laughing at the back) as I think I have more play than I used to, I've took off all the trim, and I'm faced with a panel that houses the handbrake, the door opener, the gearstick, with a rubber boot stopping you from seeing down the hole, this whole panel is held down with about 10 screws, they are all now out, and a lot of silicon, which is the point I'm at now.....
Do I get brave and slice it open and see whats down the hole, will this panel come off in one go with the handbrake, etc, still attached to the top of it?
Then once it's off just how hard is it to change the bush, what tools am I going to need, anything special?
Oh and by the way this is the T5 box not the Rover one
