I have a '92 plate 944 S2, and just recently the power steering has been making noises like chewbacca is sitting in under the bonnet. I remember this happened last winter, but when the car went in for a service it was sorted.

Can this noise be due to the cold or is it a leak? Ican't see any fluid on the floor though!!!

Have you checked the level? The rack seals can leak allowing the fluid to build up in the boots.

It does quiten down yes, once the car is properly warmed over.

Will check the level tomorrow lunchtime. Its a bit of a nightmare to see where the level is meant to be though !

Don't know but....

does the lid off the tank unscrew, and a dipstick moulded into its lid?

Yep, but its a brown tank, and the fluids pretty much brown in colour too.

It could also be resonance of the hydraulic fluid in their pipes. Nowt to worry about, as such - unless it's due to bubbles in said fluid.

Alex,
Don't know "exactly" bout the noise.
But some advise, if the colour as you say is brown !

1> drain the fluid.
2> refill the fluid
3> bleed the fluid.

Chances are its never been changed. only topped up, this also stop the annoying groan/sqeak when turned lock to lock (usually)

it works

Common fault, draining and replacing PAS fluid will reduce the noise or get rid of it totally.
