Is it possible? I'm planning on selling my X1/9 and getting a Coupe as a slightly more modern 'fun car'. With one young kid and another on the way though it would be great if we could fit child car seats in. Has anyone got experience of doing this?

you can, just.

You will have fun and games finding a seat to fit though, it depends if the seatbelt is long enough to go around the base.
We've just fitted a forward facing seat (can't remember the name of it of the top of my head) for our 11 month old daughter. We tried about half a dozen in the coupe and only one fitted. (thank goodness for that, if it didn't then it was good bye coupe)

So it's purely a question of seatbelts, rather than overall space? I guess I need to try it out with our car seat and see if it can get past the front seats and fit in.

We have a forward facing child seat that the belt threads through fairly close to the rear of the seat, so the Coupe's belt should be long enough. Oddly, my MIL's Mondeo had more problems fitting a rear facing baby seat (ie. the belt goes all the way around the seat) than my X1/9.
