Can anyone confirm if teh Chim has a rev limiter?

I've had it spinning regularly around the dial to 6/6.5 but no limiter has ever cut in and i don't need a rebuild by overstepping the mark. No confirmation from the manual either.

Its a Chim 96 500

Good question.. My 450 often goes to about 6 briefly but its hard to tell exactly where i'm changing gear as its a bit frantic..

My mates 400se Wedge seems to rev high and no rev limiter has been hit..

Theres should be a rev limiter around 6250ish if memory serves (the rev counter may not be totally accurate remember), on a standard map. TBH I wouldn't want to be hitting it though, firstly theres no need, you'll make better progress getting the next cog at 5500 tops. Also the rev limiter is a very harsh cut and it you bounce off it regularly the shock to the drive train with quickly **** the gearbox or diff.

I would be concerned that you would need to get to any limiter in a 500... Never gone into 6k Revs on either of the Chimaera's so wouldn't know.

My car has the Mark Adams chip and, according to a couple of power runs, the limit was raised to 6650rpm. Listening to a 5.0 V8 running at that speed is terrifying. eek

As previous posters have said, you should not need to hit the limit. My peak power is at 5600 and really starts to drop off after that. Un-modified cars will have peak power a bit lower lower down the range.

Peak torque is lower still at about 4400rpm. Even if you are trying to out-drag someone, change-up into second gear at least! evil

97 Chim 450 limiter is at 6250. I have managed to bounce it a couple of times - and no I didnt mean to I just got carried away ;-). And you really dont want to do it, its a hard cut on mine bit like hitting a brick wall, very unpleasant.

I find that mostly even short shifting at 4000 is enough to see everyone off. If I am really pressing on I shift up at 5500 max (well apart from the odd slip up).

I asked the same question of my '99 450, my mate showed me in his 98 450, just above 6k AND SH!T the engine sounded like it was about to explode! The limiter did kick in BUT, why would you need to know, the HP drops off dramatically up at that end, it MUST be bad to rev the engine that high and long since time to shift!

IMHO :-)

Definately there on my 500. Hit it a couple of times - first time scared the **** out of me. It is quite harsh!

Dav

PS: Surely you've not lived unless you've hit it once!

Wouldn't go hunting for the rev limiter if you value your engine. Over 5,500 rpm on the standard engine the power tends to tail off so all you are getting is noise and wear.

I agree with the comments about power/torque curves but when you are on track and or neck n neck with a fellow petrol head its disconcerting to change up & easy to get carried away at the top end - plus the power arrives so quickly it often seems too soon, especially when you've tracked highly strung jap motors redlining at 8.5 -9k in the Chim it seems premature.

Thanks anyway - at least i have the reassurance it has a limiter should i forget to look at the tacho!! although it does appear to be inconsistent with where its set

If you're hanging on at 6k when you're "neck to neck" you've lost, get another cog.

1998 400. Yes mine has a limiter which I've hit a few times in second gear accelerating hard.
Unlike other comments its not been too hard when it cuts in, more like a miss-fire accompanied by some pops and bangs.

I would guess it cuts in between 5500 and 6000 rpm but accelerating hard in 2nd gear the needle is moving round fast and I've been looking at where I'm going.
