Griffth Rear Screen Restitch in Kent

Some assistance please guys in the SE London / Kent Area.

Was drying off the rear screen to go to London Thunder and it just fell out!!! - Cotton totally rotted, but screen fully in tact.

Have been quoted so far £225 inc VAT to stitch in 'a new screen as the old one may have shrunk' (yes shrunk!)

I've spoken to Mosley Coach Trimmers in Lamberhurst, Kent but thery want me to remove the roof and bring it in.

I move house next Monday ,so the best solution / option for a full and permanent fix is urgently required. I am also considering the whole roof, as if this stitching rotted whats the rest like?

Any advice on know costs, recommendations for repairers etc appreciated. Obviously with the move I dont want to spend time in the garage doing needle work or removing roofs.

Mosley replaced my r screen last summer. They did a v good job. The price you have is the same as I paid when I removed the hood and took it into them. Two things to bear in mind (1)If the hood is in poor condition unless you insist Mosley will not fit a new window (they asked to see my hood before they took the job on)
(2)Removing and replacing the Hood is a bit tricky especialy the rear bolts that go through into the boot space above the fuel tank.
Have you tried Car Hood Warehouse ? 020 8391 5326 I think they are in Surrey.

I got Austec in Crawley to send my whole roof off for replscement after someone put their hand through what was obviously rotten stitching for my rear window .... they quoted about £325 for the rear window only (as they said the whole roof needs to come off to be done properly) or £587 for the whole lot to be done and completely recovered.

As the roof had seen better days as well I opted for the latter. Alot of money but in comparison to the amount for the rear window only I felt it the better option. The roof now looks stunning and shows just how bad the 'old' roof had got.

Austec send the whole thing away but the firm they use are trade only. Paul said you can get it done cheaper but they use this firm because the end product is worth it.

I chose to remove the hood rear section myself when having the rear window replaced on my V8S. The hood has to be pealed off of the hoop in order to repair/re-sew the window. It was not too difficult to remove or replace the rear hood however...
Having replaced the hood I found that about two inches of the window hadn't been stitched at all because the window had been cut too small. This was rectified without hassle by the trimmer, but it meant I had to remove the hood again.

When I refitted the rear panel I found that the rear window was somewhat slack and I had to rectify it myself by pealing the hood off the hoop and re-gluing it which was really difficult and not as successful as I would have liked.

My recommendation would be that you loosen all of the rear hood fixings yourself (unless you want to pay for the time it will take the trimmer to do so)then leave your car with the trimmer so that they can reglue the hood to the hoop 'in situ' ensuring that it pulls tight with no wrinkles when the rear stays are locked.

I recently needed a new rear window and visited a local trimmer, he pointed out that if the stitching was rotten in the window then it would be elsewhere and he was correct. So with advice from him I replaced the whole rear hood myself, which isn’t to difficult if your handy and I’m well pleased with the results.

Point is don’t just go for a window re-stitch if the existing thread is rotten.

There is a place in Hailsham near Eastbourne that is very good. Can't remember their name but I was told that Dream Machines use them so ask them if this is any good for you

Found 'Soft Tops' just 1 mile down the road from me in Croydon.

All repaired today went for new screen too in the end. Cost £200 incl VAT.
