Evening all!

Another 'What Shall I buy thread!'

This time, it's on the subject of tripods.

So which one should I buy? I'll be using it for general use, with my D50 and a 55-200mm lens, so it will need to be pretty chunky. I've been looking at various Mangiottos, and would ideally wish to spend up to or less than £100. Are there any brands or stores that I should be aware of? Comments appreciated.

Also, should I invest in the Nikon r/c for the shutter when I'm taking slow-shutter pictures?

Kindest regards,
Iain

There's a Manfrotto ad in this months Practical Photographer - 190D tripod with 390RC2 head for £95 (reduced from £125) or a 055CL tripod with 804RC2 head for £149 (reduced from £202).

Can't comment on the tripod, but at less than £10 the remote release is too cheap for it to be worth much thought, just buy one!

I've been following talk about this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl on another forum.

It seems pretty good value.

I've got a manfrotto 190PROB with a 460MG head. Bought from www.parkcameras.co.uk as they are fairly near me and the price was good. Although it does take you a little over £100.

Have been out with it a few times and I can't fault it. It's got great height and can go very low and horizontal to. It could be nice if it was a little lighter but I don't really have a problem carrying it around all day.

I have been using a Velbon Ultra Luxi F (I think thats right) with my D50 and Sigma 70-300 with no problems whatsoever. Very stable even when fully extended, goes very low and very high - easily reaches eye-level. In fact it goes both lower and higher than the two manfrottos I also considered buying. It even has 3 spirit levels, which I find quite useful.
I picked one up from Jessops after finding some cheaper prices on the web. Only (minor) problem with it is that it is gold yuck

ETA it was significantly cheaper than the Manfrottos too

manfrotto, every day of the week.
seek advice as to which model is best suited to your needs and you will not regret or have the desire (or need) to upgrade

What he said. Only had to upgrade when I got a significantly heavier piece of kit and needed a spirit level.

Manfrottos are nice and not in a bad price range. (I have the 055 MF4)

Gitzo would be the Rolls Royce of the lot I found my dads in the loft (it weighs about the same as my MF4, the same height and will take just as much of a load, not bad for a 10 year old tripod)

Note it's not just about the base, but the head as well

I'd say avoid the 460MG (I have one and am not a fan, with heavier lenses once you tighten the knobs you'll find the camera moves as well

If you can, get a ball head (The pistol grip ones look quite easy to use and I'm going to look into one sometime)

Just in cas you're like me, and have good intentions of not spending a lot (but invariably end up spending a lot more than planned!), you may consider one of these:

(phoned started to ring on this one just as I was taking a photo with the camera phone)

It's a Benro C-327 3-section Carbon Fibre Tripod (copy of the Gitzo G1327 rrp: £400+) mated to a Manfrotto Junior 410 geared head. All in it's cost me just over £300.

I skimped first time round and regretted it. I'd recommend if you're going to buy a tripod, buy the best you can afford/swallow the first time round

£300... I have a perfectly good set of arms which I got for free when I was born.

Just kidding, I have an el-crappo tripod and it's a total waste of space, so it's definately worth getting a decent one.

The Boy 'David Baddiel' Wilkinson has been moaning about me not giving him a mention for recommending the Man head.

Thanks Watko!

Thanks for the replies - getting my head around things just now.

Another quick question - anybody here bought the Quentis (or whatever) that was sold on eBay? Seems remarkably cheap, just now. . .

The list must be :

-Manfrotto 055 kit thingy - however, realistically, it may be over the budget, but if it's that good, then needs must. . .
-Quentis carbon eBay wonder
-Gold Velbon

Comments appreciated.

Those ebay ones look too good to be true - I bet they never sold anywhere at anything near the price being listed there.

Mine arrived today.. Wow! I'm dead impressed. The quality is damn good on everything except the catches which stop the legs from coming out, they are just simple plastic clips and feel a bit fragile. Everything else is top notch. Didnt think it'd be anything like as good as it is for the money.

highly reccommended if you are on a tight budget.

Hi guys,

Thought I'd update you all - I went for the (drum roll please) eBay Qentis Carbon Wonder!

My offer of £25 was accepted (yeah!) and it arrived about a week ago (woop!) and it's actually rather good indeed (phew!).

As Altrezia said, the head is almost pure metal, and it pans and moves pretty well. The legs are carbon, but the clips are plastic - however, after only paying £25, I cannot really complain.

Dead chuffed with it - I'll be going out this weekend (holidays!!) to try it out.

Thanks to all who replied and Merry Christmas to every last one of you,
Iain

I've just been outside getting shots of frosty things with one of these, and I can officially say that I don't really like it.

The "twist lock" is great indoors when playing and testing, but just now with cold hands on location, I could have thrown the bloody thing across the field! Its soooo tight when cold!!

The head is so un-tight, you unlock one of the axis and the cam moves about 4 inches not 4mm!!

Bit gutted really as I looked around a lot and this seemed like a really good one for £70.

I shall be selling it on ebay and getting this 190 pro b which is perfect for what I need and about £80. Funnily enough, they do a carbon one thats identical but is £175!!! and its only 10g (yes 10 grammes) lighter! hehe

Not sure about the head yet but I think the 460MG looks like a goodun. I need to use it for video too though.

Just my 2p.
