Heated mirrors

Thankfully, they are, 'cos when the glass fell out of the offside mirror last night on the way back from the Chinese takeaway, I didn't lose it. The glass, that is, not the takeaway.

One of the plastic supports in the mirror mechanism seems to have snapped off. I was just going to glue the circular section on the back of the mirror onto the circular section on the motors. Is that OK?

(Oh, and what switches the heating elements on? On most cars, they come on with the heated rear window...)

You'll be OK, for about 3 months mine was stuck on with double sided pads in the way you describe.
Until I went to the garage and the chap took them off, put the mirror in place and moved over the locking tab. DOH!

I think they come on everytime you start up! Having no HRW I don't think TVR thought of anything else.

Apparently the mirrors come on for 15mins after the car is started, but only if the car is started when the doors are shut!!

Actually, I think it depends on when it was made. On mine I think - because I have no real idea - they come on for a bit if you turn the fan on. 1996 model.

Get some "special" double sided tape from your friendly dealer - apparently expensive stuff (so blag some for free) but works well...ordinary double sided sticky stuff doesn't last any time at all. Alternatively, disconnect the heater element wires and they will stick on much longer....

I may have misunderstood what you're describing, but I'd try to avoid gluing anything in such a way that you could no longer remove the mirror glass, unless that is your only option. Some of the plastics used in the mirror do seem to deteriorate over time and get quite brittle, and are nigh on impossible to glue. If it's a choice between replacing the whole unit and going mad with the araldite, then glue away.

You're a star, you are. A quick shufty this morning reveals that the locking tab seems to have come undone. I didn't have time to put the glass back, but I shall try that tonight.

Well, you're a superstar. Put the mirror in the full "up" position, put the glass on, pushed the locking tab over with a screwdriver. Took 30 seconds.

Guess I'll have to go for a drive now to make sure it's OK. Damn.

I do not appear to have a locking tab - I do have 2 strips of double sided sticky tape which has reached the end of its natural life. Can anyone tell me where the locking tabs are located otherwise I will have to resort to some contact adhesive as I need the car tomorrow.

On my 97 model you push the mirror adjust joystick in - theres a clunk of a relay under the dash somewhere and the mirror heaters come on - 10 or 15 minute timer I think.

Apparently this is quite unusual I am told most just come on when you start the engine.....

Any idea where the locking tabs are though ? I am being blind as usual and need to find them.

push the glass all the way forward at the top and look in the void between the bottom and the housing. There is a tag moulded into a ring arrangement that (from memory) points straight down... a thin screwdriver or similar should be able to use that to rotate the ring 15 degrees or so in the plane of the galss (can't remember which way, sorry) that will release the glass complete with ring from the rest of the gubbins. A torch may help. Be firm but gentle (the secret with so much in life and love )
