Looking to get the FIL a laptop for xmas. Needs to be able to run most modern programs and well as wireless broadband with no issues.

He wont be playing games and it will be used 100% within the house.

I presently have an acer which is great, and bought it from Laptops Direct who were fine so thinking that might be the combo to go for, but wonder if anyone had any other views.

Really looking to spend no more than £400 and preferably under £350.

Any views?

Just bought an advent laptop from PC World, celeron 1.4Ghz, 1024MB RAM, DVD writer and wireless modem built in for £400.

I'm sure they had some cheaper, but i went for one with the bigger memory.

Bought a linksys wireless modem, also on offer, and i'm fully set up. Biggest downfall is it only has a 50Gb hard drive, which currently has over 20G of ripped cd's etc. oops. seems to cope no problem with wireless broadband, video downloads etc. Pretty good at ordinary games as well.

Quite impressived with the 15.4" screen as well. Well worth a look.

I got mine from laptopshop.co.uk - very good service. And reasonably priced refurbs are available there too.

I am having a look round for a cheap laptop for myself. Dell laptops start at just £329 for a basic system which has a reasonable spec. www.dell.co.uk

Seconded. But get the best waranty possible regardless of where you buy it from. Laptops generally take a beating a lot better than a desktop machine but well, best to be safe right?

Seconded with Dell
Bought the other half a cheap Dell laptop a year ago.
Screen quality is stunning, performance is more than adequate and it's been boringly reliable.

Not needed it - but another good reason to get Dell is that there are third party companies offering to fix out of warranty Dells (e.g. Upgrade Options); hence unlikely to get shafted by repair costs.
