Is Exchange or SBS2003 involved at all?
You mentioned client so I assume the error is appearing on it.
What happens if you try to check the event log directly on the server? Any further messages?

yes this is exchange and happens on one server which is sbs2k3 and a 2003 exchange server, event log gets access denied and unfortunatly only 1 server has a backup services administrator account
