Splashed out on some Rukka trousers + jacket just over 3 years ago. It has been leaking slightly in very heavy rain for a while - My stomach, crotch, thighs & arms get very slightly wet so I decided to investigate getting it tested as it comes with a 5 year guarantee.

The dealer asked how long ago I had washed the kit & from memory it has been over a year. She said that a wash will clear the pores in the goretex layer & it will keep the water out again after.

Anyone had any success trying this?

She did say that if it still leaked they would send it off, so I guess it's worth a try.

I was told that too when I bought Rukka - haven't washed it yet to be able to confirm though I'm afraid.

I've got Goretex Dainese gear and washing helped it stay waterproof. Dont use normal washing powder though, you can buy special stuff for goretex -

Hope that helps.

In very heavy rain, you will get a damp backside, due to the porous nature of Goretex and the fact that your arse is converting the moisture under it to steam (of sorts) therefore able to travel through the pores.

I think I have washed my Rukka kit twice in the 3 years I've had it, and with a couple of rips in it (a stupid off), it's still nice and dry (apart from the damp arse mentioned above)

p.s. I used non-bio powder if that helps

When you're next riding in a downpour, check that there are'nt creases in the areas that are getting damp, as these collect water that just sits there and seeps in. You may just need to adjust the suit (straps on waist, bands on arms, and do the zip and band on bottom of trou) to reduce the creases.

Hope this helps!

Try some Nikwax. Works on my Goretex climbing gear.

I have gortex stuff and regularly wash it and retreat it and it's as good as new. I use fabsil. This seems to help by getting the water to form droplets on the surface which then run off rather than soak in.
