Righty ho then, Medieval Total War 2 is playing silly buggers on my ancient PC and I'm having the same issues as I did with Rome (along with other games) so it's time to upgrade!

Budget is £800 for motherboard, processor, memory, power supply and graphics card. I'm keeping the same HD, DVD-R, case as my old old computer to save myself a bit of cash.

The games I play aren't really FPS intensive as I no longer play first person shooters or racing games, it's mostly real time strategy and RPG.

I'm hearing good things about the new Nvidia 7950GT, is this all its cracked up to be?

Any advice would be much appreciated, I've been out of the loop in terms of PC hardware for a couple of years and I haven't got a clue what's what any more!

Intel Core 2 Duo , at least 2GB DDR2 RAM, not sure on graphics card but PCI-Express and at least 256MB RAM.

To be honest Im finding it hard to self build at the prices you can buy pre-built. Dell for example do some very fine fast machines well specc'd with flat panel 19 inch monitors for around £800.

7950GT is old skool so not worth it. the 8800 is out now!

Something along these lines:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz 1066FSB LGA775 4MB cache Retail inc.Fan (3yr Manufacturers Warranty) (CPUIP4775E6600) £177.99 £177.99
Asus P5B Deluxe 965 Socket 775 Motherboard Core 2 Duo/ Core 2 Extreme PCI-E x16 ATX (MOTASUP5BD) £100.45 £100.45
Tagan 480W whisper quiet 21dB TG480-U01+dual fan supports12v EPS SATA/XEON ATX/BTX (3 Year Warranty) (PSUTAG480U01) £54.80 £54.80
Albatron Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB DDR3 Dual DVI PCI-E Retail (VIDALB8800GTS)
£269.50 £269.50

Total Price Excluding VAT £ 602.74
VAT @ 17.5% £ 105.48
Total Price Including VAT £ 708.22

Plus 100-200 on DDR2 memory.

These are components I've thrown together , should work but may need tweaking on the PSU front etc.

Buy a Dell XPS desktop unit and drop the display.
Saves so much hassle to have the beast delivered assembled with an OS installed.

That's what I'm thinking, plus it won't let me drop the monitor and there's a choice of 2 graphics cards...

XPS 210. No monitor, free Vista Premium upgrade, 1Gb RAM, onboard sound *shrug* and unfortunatley a PCI-E ATi card.

True, not an Nvidia unit and whilst I personally don't like their drivers others do.

£705 inc VAT & Delivery.

It would do me as a gaming rig.

Radeon x1300 256mb, barely scrapes windows vista compatable never mind for games, & for that I get 850 quid with stuff the bloke doesnt want or need.

(Thats with the 256mb graphics card & 6600 CPU), no monitor. To pick no monitor start with the '599' unit).

Don't buy Dell, buy your own and get more bang for buck. Plus you can pick and choose components.

BTW, I thought about an E6600 recently, but bought an E6400 and overclocked the bastard - now quicker than the E6600 and running no hotter - gotta love the Core Duo.

This is true, however I'm merely playing with the configuration app on the website and not looking at the factory referb stuff they do (which again comes with a single warranty), where you will find stuff like this beastie http://outlet.dell.com/Emea_Dfo/EuDis!-17485204!-221948072!1164836591216
or this one http://outlet.dell.com/Emea_Dfo/EuDis!-17485204!-221948072!1164836591216 which has twin 6800 Ultra's (apparently).
or hmm... http://outlet.dell.com/Emea_Dfo/EuDis!-17485204!-221948072!1164836591216 which has a Core 2 Duo, the PCI-e 7600GS card (meh it'll do for a year or so).

I'd get the best board bundle from this lot of nicepeople and buy a new graphics card from them as well.
